i7-9700k/RTX 2060 6GB VRAM vs. i5-9600k/RTX 2070 8GB VRAM

Hi,

Been a lurker for many years now and am now posting my first topic.

I have been looking at a new machine for P3D and am debating between the two following options:

1) i7-9700k/RTX 2060 6GB VRAM

2) i5-9600k/RTX 2070 8GB VRAM

Of course the best of both worlds would be to go i7-9700k/RTX 2070 8GB VRAM, but that combination is a bit expensive for me so I am debating which combo above would be the better choice for P3D v4.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

I would go for #2.  The 9600K will handle p3d very well.

I agree with Matt. I am pretty sure that choosing the RTX 2070 over the 2060 will bring you more perceptible benefit than the difference between the 2 CPUs you mentionned.

Rtx cards...all I’d say is do your research. I’d wait, so say there is a new batch in manufacturing this month, with memory that actually works.

Its cheaper to not bin the gpus its the 104-106 series, why they dont do the same with 102 2080TI there they bin , mem micron mems ar not bad can bee faster then the samsung  the micron mems runs hotter.

i have both micron and samsung equipped RTX 2080TI with A1 chip

back to TS go for the stronger gpu 2070 - 9600 kombo

Definitely 2.

The main advantage of an i7 over an i5 is the additional cores/threads, but that's something P3D can't really make much use of as it's still very much dependent on single core performance and a high clock speed. So all the extra spec you'd pay for in an i7 mostly sits there doing nothing. Whereas a 2070 over a 2060 will make a notable difference.

Same here, go for the 9600K and the stronger GPU. The 9600K is basically what I have in P3D, as I disabled the hyper-threaded cores via AffinityMask. 6 cores are enough, the two extra cores of the 9700K will serve you almost nothing. Bring that 9600K to 5.0 - 5.2GHz on all cores and you will be a happy camper with P3Dv4.x.

No mention of the display to be used..no way to answer the question of how much difference a 2070 will make without knowing what display environment he's driving.  A 2060 will do fine on a 24" 1920x1080 display...not so good on a large format 50-inch 4k display that needs AA for acceptable IQ.

We have to be careful now not to lump i7s together...it used to be that "i7" was synonymous with hyperthreading-enabled, but the 9700K is an i7 without HT.  HT's virtual cores are something P3D makes limited use of...additional physical cores are a different animal entirely (to a point).  P3D does make use of those additional physical cores, particularly in the scenery/texture loading department.

Actually, your 8700K has a 12MB L2 cache...the 9600K an underwhelming 9MB.  So the 8700K, even with HT disabled, still looks to be the better choice over the 9600K (at similar clock speeds).

Excuse me, but ... it depends. What motherboard do you plan to use? And the psu? A pc must be planned together.
