Why Windows 10?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

The suggested system requirements for Prepar3D list Windows 10 while the minimum requirements state Windows 7. What part of Windows 10 is it that will increase performance with this sim?

Regards,

Steve Shallcross.

I don't remember seeing anything that suggests performance will increase with Win 10.

Win 10 is most likely the OS that the software is developed on, so it would follow that it is recommended for best compatibility.  Also, I doubt that Win 7 will be continue to be supported by LM after it hits Microsoft's official end-of-support just over 6 months from now in Jan 2020.

Is it not a consideration that newer operating systems are optimised for newer hardware and software, & visa versa, therefore a new PC with Windows 10 will run better than a new PC with Windows 7?

Just a thought.

A big factor is if you ever wish to use VR, then Windows 10 is preferred.

I'm guessing it was the hopefulness of Win10 with DirectX12, Win7 does not support DX12.
Myself stuck in time with FSX DX9c (No DX10 preview or DX10 Fixer) on Win7 64 Pro - DX11 native with a GTX770 Graphics card. I just can't like anything about Win10 even though it is installed on my back up machine (Laptop), the start menu and file explorer really bug me, along with app related program implementation, and the broken updates which have occurred more than once since W10 inception. Dang I hate the inconvenient W10 update process.

I have held out on Win10 for many reasons, though I may inevitably be biting the Win10 bullet for my FS machine come Jan 2020 when Win7 support ceases.

The Start menu can be made to resemble Win 7 with very little effort - the tiled, App Store section can be permanently disabled. I'm not sure what you mean by the "app related program implementation". It seems no different to me than it was in Win 7. I've never noticed any issues with File Explorer - what is it that you dislike?

The updates have certainly been a problem for some people but the majority, like me, seem to have mostly been unaffected. I think that part of the problem has been as a consequence of people pressing the "Check for updates" button which always gives you all of the available updates, even if they're not fully compatible with your system - Microsoft has always advised waiting for updates to be offered, unprompted. Also, limiting the updates to just essential/security updates (easy to implement) rather than including drivers also seems to avoid many problems.

I had to use Win 7 recently on my backup PC to retrieve a few files and it now seems so clunky and dated by comparrison. I could certainly not go back to Win 7 now.

You also have to bear in mind that future hardware will be optimised for the latest OS, and just like W XP finding drivers will become more difficult, Microsoft are rolling out a May W10 update that will move some W10 versions beyond end of service so that they continue getting support.
