Question for computer guys about cooling...

Hi all,

I don't know much about computers, have never taken the side off my Corsair 750D case. Can I install a cooler in this case? [BTW I would need to get my son to do it}. I have my sim setup in my office where i keep the temp at about 75 degrees. I get some skitters and shakes over certain scenery, and thought maybe cooling might help. You can see my specs below. Any cooler suggestions, or other suggestions on how to improve performance appreciated! Thanks!

Are you talking about a case fan for cooling or a CPU fan?

I have this same case, all of the fans are installed inside the case.  very simple to do, they screw holes are all pre-configured for fan or water cooling.  You pretty much screw it in and plug in the power.  Before you go down this road, if you have never actually opened the case i suspect you have some dust buildup that is impacting your cooling effectiveness.  I would take of all of the fan screens (either magnet or clips) and vacuum them.  Then use a can of computer compressed air to blow out the inside parts.  See how you do and then you can determine next step.

I would also suggest you use a program like HardwareMonitor to actually watch the CPU / GPU temps. Something a bit more objective than skitters and shakes over certain scenery, which could be any number of other issues.

Thanks guys, sorry to take so long to get back to you. Appreciate the suggestions. I have cleaned it up, not very much dust to blow away. And now did 2 short flights today to test the GPU temps: KIND to KSDF in the default Baron, and KPHL to JFK in the Turbine Duke. On exiting the runways, both flight temps were 64c. Is this acceptable? Or would some type of cooler help the skitters? Didn't have much on the first flight, but quite a few from Philly up to Kennedy.

CPU temp of 64C is normal.  I see that all the time with water cooling.

Thanks Mark, so no need for me to get a water cooler? Just the fans in my case.

The only way CPU temps will impact performance is if the CPU temp hits the point where throttling occurs, typically 90-100 deg C. 

So better cooling will not help clear up stutters in the circumstances you describe.

I have regular case fans and use the Corsair H115 Water Cooler.  I thought it would be miles better than a CPU fan cooler but I had the Nochua on my old computer and honestly I think it was better.

So do you think the H115 cooler would give be better performance, and lower the temps; maybe lessen the skitters? I don't want to spend $100+ if I don't get any improvement! Thanks for your help!

It really depends on your overclock and if you delid your cpu. I am at 4.8 and delid. Chip is 8700k. I had to play around with the temp profiles of the fans because they were CRANKING to 100% to keep it cooler which I realize was not necessary.

Unless you're approaching 100 degrees C (and CPU throttling is occurring), no cooler will improve system performance. If you don't overclock (or only apply a mild overclock), there's virtually no difference between water coolers and the best air coolers.  It's only when you really push the CPU clock speed that water cooling comes into its own. As w6kd has already pointed out, at the sort of temperatures you're now getting, a new cooler will not stop stuttering - you need to be looking elsewhere for a solution.

Your CPU temp is absolutely fine, no issue there. Worth monitoring your GPU temp, but if it's only with certain scenery you need to look at the sim itself for an answer.

OK I get it guys! Temp is not affecting stutters. I don't know what else to look for? As I only fly GA with an occasional Saab 340 flight, maybe i just need to stay away from heavy scenery like JFK, LAX, SFO, etc.

Relief now knowing i don't have a temp problem, and i am not overclocked.

That or just turn down settings (autogen density and lod_radius will make the biggest differences in this case).
