Orbx released Global Buildings HD

Well that sucks. Guess I’ll be passing on this too 😕 (I fly to a lot of default airports that payware refuses to cover)

Just reinstall Rex.That should work.

If a texture file contains mipmaps, then the lower resolution mipmap will be used.

Quote

That's what I assumed, so I asked the ORBX dev to offer 2K textures. It's not going to water down his add-on. It will actually make it better.

Hello,

the texture do contain mipmaps, it would appear.

Not that it matters to you.

I just noticed that the ORBX HD buildings installation replaced all the default terminal textures I had installed with REX Worldwide textures HD. The hangars it left alone. Anyone else notice this?

Hi,
i guess that won't help. Rex installs the textures directly into the Prepar3D v4\Texture folder. If then orbx buildings are loaded, these files will be "overloaded". So the orbx textures are the winners.

As some have already reported, I hardly noticed a difference between default and orbx. Only if you compare 2 screenshots you can see the differences.
Whether one really needs a 4K resolution for the orbx textures I dare to doubt.
Due to the varied colors of the orbx textures, the overall picture has a more contrasting effect.
Whether it's worth the money, everyone has to decide for themselves.

PS: I believe the overall impression at night is worth the money...

Bill, how did you accomplish that? Given that ORBX puts the buildings HD in a completely different directory than REX does for their airport textures.

If you compare the file names of the REX Worldwide Airports backup folder (REX Worldwide Airports\BackupP3D4\Texture) with the file names in the Orbx Buildings folder (Prepar3D v4\ORBX\Scripts\BuildingsHD\Core\Texture"), you can see which Rex files being overwriten by ORBX.
Not all REX texture files are overwritten. Of 315 REX files, 156 are overwritten by ORBX in my case (same file names).
You could now delete these 156 files from the ORBX folder, then you would have the full enjoyment of REX-Worldwide Airports.
But after the next ORBX update all files would be back!

 In the Orbx Buildings control panel there are two options :-

1) Orbx Global BASE Mode and

2) FSX/P3D Default Mode.

With a note above " If you do not have Orbx Global Base installed, Buildings HD will use a different set of roof textures."  So I understand this to be you only get the enhanced roof  textures if you have Global Range installed, however as FTX Regions are included in  the Buildings HD package are we to assume that the enhanced roof textures are also included if we opt for option 2)

I copied the 3 DarkGravelRoof*.dds files from the main texture folder to the Orbx\Scripts\BuildingsHD\Core\Texture folder to achieve the 3rd image above.

Are all the files in order? Am trying to decide if I want to buy and tweak this app.

That's the list of files in my REX Worldwide Airports backup folder. So that would have to be all the files that REX modifies and writes to the P3D\Texture folder. 156 of these file names can be found in the orbx folder. (IN MY CASE)

One more note:
For example, the file "air_tb1_2" in the P3D/Texture folder (modified by REX) is a .dds file. In the ORBX folder there is the same file, only as .bmp
That messes things up a bit. As far as I know, P3D prefers the .dds files if both have the same filename.
This means that not all files in the Orbx folder will take effect!

Hi,

my solution to that was to install Rex WAP externally, like ORBX does it, and making sure that the Rex package is loaded after ORBX. So my simulator core files are still the default, then ORBX overrides some of them and lastly Rex again overrides whatever came before it.

Please note that ORBX BuildingsHD and Rex WAP consist of multiple elements, not only textures.

To achieve an external installation IIRC I tricked the Rex product into thinking that P3D was in a different location (L:\Prepar3D v4 Add-ons\Rex_WAP) by putting a dummy Prepar3D.exe into that empty folder. After applying the product, there were three folders in there "Scenery, SimObjects, Texture". Then I linked those folders to P3D with an add-on.xml

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<SimBase.Document Type="AddOnXml" version="4,0" id="add-on">
  <AddOn.Name>Rex_WAP</AddOn.Name>
  <AddOn.Description />
  <AddOn.Component>
    <Category>Scenery</Category>
    <Path>L:\Prepar3D v4 Add-ons\Rex_WAP\Scenery\Global</Path>
    <Name>RexWapGlobal</Name>
    <Layer>3</Layer>
  </AddOn.Component>
  <AddOn.Component>
    <Category>Texture</Category>
    <Path>L:\Prepar3D v4 Add-ons\Rex_WAP\Scenery\World\Texture</Path>
    <Name>RexWapWorldTexture</Name>
  </AddOn.Component>
  <AddOn.Component>
    <Category>Texture</Category>
    <Path>L:\Prepar3D v4 Add-ons\Rex_WAP\Texture</Path>
    <Name>RexWapTexture</Name>
  </AddOn.Component>
</SimBase.Document>

The important part is to make sure that Rex is discovered after Orbx in C:\ProgramData\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v4\add-ons.cfg

[Package.0]
Path=C:\Program Files\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v4\ORBX\Scripts\BuildingsHD
Title=Orbx Buildings HD
Active=TRUE
Required=FALSE
[Package.1]
Path=L:\Prepar3D v4 Add-ons\Rex_WAP
Title=Rex_WAP
Active=TRUE
Required=FALSE

Best regards
