I7 4790K V Ryzen 7 1700X question

Can anyone advise me on my conundrum, I currently have an I7 4790K overclocked to 4.4 GHZ with 16 GB of Ram with a GTX 1070, my son has a Ryzen 7 1700X and he is thinking about upgrading to a Ryzen 7 3800X when they are released, He said I can have his old CPU and Motherboard for free if I want, however in 6/12 month(s) time I was thinking about upgrading myself to an Amd Ryzen 3800X, how overclockable are ryzens? I know single core perfomance is king in the flightsim world, I know the 1700X is a newer Cpu than my 4790K but my single core speed is superior, would single core performance of the 1700X be better than my old I7? What would people go for?

No your 4790K haver better Single core performance if you run it at 4.4ghz its even better then a 2700X clocked at 4.3ghz. 

the ryzen cpus is not  great overclockers  , dont know how well the Ryzen 3000 overclock but in a week we know.

have a 1800x and  a 4790k that i compared in p3d , i prefered the 4790k @4.6ghz before the Ryzen 1800X run at only 4.1ghz  ( poor overclocker)

The I7 is about 15 % faster in single core performance. Not all Moterboards are going to be comapatble with the new Rysen series. So just double check if it is getting the bios update.

Your current I7 is very likely to be the better performer.

That said, do you ever suffer from long pauses in P3D? i.e. 1 second or longer?
One thing I have noticed is that a lot of 4-core Intel CPU simmers seem to suffer from long pauses. My experience with the 1700X is that it doesn't.

You didn't say which mobo you would be getting from your son. Here's a list of what is compatible with the latest Zen 2 / 3rd Gen CPUs.

You'll need to check on the manufacturer's website. Many B350s and X370s are compatible, but need an older Ryzen CPU on-board to flash bios if there's no USB stick method available.

Ryzen loves fast RAM, DDR4 3200 Mhz is considered to be the level to aim for before latency becomes more important.


While it's still the no.1 priority (hence why I think I'm going for a 3700X very soon), P3D is no longer just about the single thread speed.
The improvements to make it a multi-thread app have let my OC'd 1700X punch well above its weight.

The Ryzen 3000 series are already pushed to their limits but I like how AMD brought the competition back on the table, so prices go down slowly and all of that benefits the consumer. so far, from almost all the English language YT reviews that I've watched the AMD has closed the gap in single core performance by a considerable amount. 3600 and 3700X are the sweet spot for gaming, I am waiting for 3950X since I have to have many other tasks open at the same time with P3D.
