The "magic" of a NEW Config file

After installing ORBX Global HD Buildings, I saw a huge dip in my FPS.....down into the teens most of the time.  I have almost everything ORBX produces, and I have REX Environment Force, AND REX SkyForce.  I use Active Sky for P3d for weather.

My computer is a recent Jetline Build that is about the best one they make....and I've enjoyed great FPS, usually in the 40's and 50's with all the above.  But after installing, then deleting, and reinstalling Global HD Buildings, my FPS was way down in the teens.and stuttering often.

The magic fix for me, which is often stated on this forum, was to rename my old config....and create a new one.   Yes, it's a little work to go back into "OPTIONS" and put all your settings back in, but it sure is worth it.

So..Today after the new config was established, I restarted the computer, and reinstalled ORBX Global HD Buildings.   My FPS is now back to the mid 40's and 50's in most cases.  It does go down to the high 20's and 30's when landing at ORLY or JFK, or somewhere with scenery intensity.  However, it's smooth and fluid 99% of the time.

I really believe that as we keep adding new scenery and other addons that become enticingly available to us, that producing a NEW CONFIG is truly beneficial and healthy for the sim.

Don't forget to force a MIGRATION in FTX Central if you start to see black squares of scenery not naturally connecting to you scenery as you fly over it.

So, I hope this helps some of you who are having sim slowdown or other performance problems that suddenly arise.  It sure helped me today.

Ps.   So, blaming ORBX Global HD Buildings for my slowdown was incorrect.  The program was fine.  It was just a "bloated configuration", in my opinion.

I second this.

 

I was having issues a few months ago with pauses and random lockups while flying low and slow or high and fast.  I searched the internet and watched loads of Youtubes recommended various fixes and settings.  After hours of tweaking and adjusting my CFG file nothing seemed to work.  So I deleted it and run the sim again to build a new one with the thought of tweaking from a fresh CFG file.  However, in my test flight before tweaking, I noticed all the issues I was having were gone.  Completely gone.  It's been smooth ever since.  I highly recommend a fresh CFG for anyone having issues.

Go to your drive where P3d is located.  Mine is C.  Go to USERS....then your name (mine is Stan.  There is Public and Default there with it)….then go to App Data... then to Roaming....then to Lockheed Martin...and then to Prepar3d v4....and finally to Prepar3d.cfg.

Here is where you right click on it and RENAME it.  I renamed mine Prepar3d.cfgOLD1.

You'll be asked if you want to really do this, and say yes to that.  Your new config will be generated when you restart P3d.

Before doing this though, it would be a good idea to go into all of the various P3D configuration screens where you set things like anti-aliasing, screen resolution, weather display distance etc. Either write them down, or take a photo of each screen if you have a phone with a camera. When you create a new configuration file, all of these settings will revert back to defaults. Having a record of how they were previously set makes it easy to put them back.

Deleting the P3D.cfg file should not affect any of your controller assignments for yokes, pedals, throttles etc. Those are kept in a different file.

That’s good advice. I have Orbx textures, landclass and vector. I now re-force migration in FTX Central after any addition or deletion of scenery - even non-Orbx products. I used to have problems with occasional black squares in the scenery, but have not had the issue since adopting this practice.

Can you confirm that to force migration in FTX Central, I need to:

Left menu bar > Settings > Tools > Force Migration

And that's all?

I have been following this topic and wonder if regenerating my Prepar3d.cfg file will correct another problem that I have.

Going into Scenery Library, I see that, in many entries in the Enable column, the box is greyed out. This only applies to entries that are enabled (and not all of them) and this means it is not possible to select these entries in order to Move, Edit, Add or Delete the area.

Is this due to some fault in my setup or is it a 'feature' of P3D 4.5 HF1? If the former, what is the fault and how can I fix it? If the latter, why is it happening?

Another 'feature' of P3D 4.5 is that there seems to be no correlation between Scenery Library and Scenery.cfg. It used to be possible to manually edit Scenery.cfg and the result would appear in Scenery Library. But if this is attempted now, P3D freezes and demands to be restarted. I assume LM must have had a good reason for making this change but it's very inconvenient! And some scenery programs, e.g. Orbx, have a nasty habit of forcing their entries to the top of Scenery Library - can this be stopped/corrected?

I hope someone can answer my questions! Thanks for any help with these problems...

I'd like to see this response too. If it gets better then there must be something that is changed in the process.

Just a note: you can save your current Options settings by clicking the "Save Settings" at the top of the Options - Display page. It will ask you to give that particular save a name. A file with those Options settings is then saved in your Documents->P3Dv4 Files under that name. You can then re-install those Options settings at any time by using the bar immediately under Profiles:and browsing for that particular save. 

This will only save your Options settings, it won't save any special changes you made in the P3D.cfg file.

You can do the same thing for your Key and Axis Assignments using the Export and Import buttons at the bottom of the Options - Key Assignments page. These files are also saved in the P3Dv4 Files folder.

Just in case anyone didn't know.

As for the grayed out entries in the Scenery Library, this is usually because the developer has chosen to put a scenery type entry in the addons file, for whatever reason. If you go into Add-ons using the button at the bottom of the Scenario screen, you'll see these particular entries with a working tick box. From personal experience, if you disable any of these entries, you should restart the sim after unticking the box.

Yeah I've done the same after getting knocked for 6 trying to fly out of EGLL in my QW787.

Was down to low teens.

Deleted and created new config and deleted shaders folder and rebuilt. 

Then went back to EGLL in the same conditions and frames up over 50fps.

I tweaked it to make it prettier and could keep constant 30ish fps whilst flying around. 

It's like a reinstall of p3d.
