Kneepad web browsing...

Hey 'tdragger' and others. A few in the community seem to have found a way to pull up websites through the kneepad. Site's like NOAA offer a wealth of info while in flight and don't require us to switch out of the sim to find out the latest weather report online. It would be nice to see this improved in FSX since this capability is already possible in FS9. What would really help something like this along would be if we could get some basic browsing function out the kneepad like an address bar and forward/back buttons. The browsing option seems to work allot better as an instant resource versus the static checklist.

The reason we moved to HTML in the kneeboard was it enabled us to author formatted information easily. It did have one problem, though. Whenever the kneeboard was open in full screen we had to disable any two-pass rendering because it was incompatible with the browser. The only thing this affected in FS2004 was full screen anti-aliasing but FSX uses many, many more techniques to achieve the effects you've seen in the screenshots. The net result is that we had to move to a different technology for the kneeboard. It's unfortunate for folks that have taken advantage of web browsing but that happens sometimes when you try to exploit undocumented and unsupported functionality.

Here is an idea for the 3-d party developers: PDA gauge add-on, say, Dell Axim with internet uplink and IE simulator for WM5.0 :)

Thomas:I was talking about the best form factor for the internet browser in the virtual cockpit. If you have a real pda, you can do all that (and more) on your pda. I was talking about VC web-browsing gauge, and it's great if such thing already exists (like FS browser). However, if you want to go far with a realism, then you assume you have virtual internet uplink to your virtual pda or tabletpc simulator (or emulator), which implies that you also have to model all other features and system failures. The joke part is that I have enough trouble with real pda failures in a real cockpit that I don't want to bring into virtual cockpit. As for the *real* external pda attached to FS and a moving map feature that you were talking about, I don't know if I want to mess with that since there are virtual gps units already available for FS...Regards,Grapesh

Once I got it figured out, it worked very well and reliably (until my PDA failed, but that's a different story). I imagine you are already aware of this, but GPSOut is available at Pete Dowson's page - http://www.schiratti.com/dowson.html. The other software I use is PocketFMS (donationware freeware but they ask for a donation) at www.pocketfms.com. Lots of directions on how to set it up at the pocketfms forum.
