Setting flaps before takeoff and "double check that please"

Recommended Posts

Hello,

It has happened several times now that the FO keeps saying "double check that please" after the Flaps challenge during the before takeoff checklist. I'm using voice control and SOP 1. I do not have any axis tied to the flaps, and the upper EICAS shows the actual flaps setting that has been briefed for. By the way, I've tried both flaps 10 and flaps 20 for takeoff.

Captain: "Before takeoff checklist please"
FO: "Flaps?"
Captain: "Flaps twenty" - (when flaps 20 have been briefed for and confirmed set on the EICAS)
FO then says: "Double check that please, before takeoff checklist complete" (even though the flaps is actually at twenty).

The flaps are all set correct - I've checked that several times. The flap setting on the dep brief panel is the same as the flaps handle and the EICAS, still - the FO don't seem to make sense of the actual setting somehow.

Is this an error in the voice recordings?

Regards,

Kyrre Andersen

Hi Bryan,

Voice control and using the latest version. Seems to happen regardless of voice set used.

I don' know if it used to occur also in the past..I just recently started using the software.

Are you able to reproduce the issue?

Hi Kyrre,

I just tried it in the BCF and the regular models.

It worked fine.

I called for the Before Takeoff Checklist.... I tried with both Flaps 10 and 20.... the flaps were in the proper position as shown in the upper EICAS display.

And it worked perfectly.

Are you 1000 percent sure you're running the latest version of everything?

Is your flap handle connected to your joystick in anyway?

Hi Bryan,

I just checked, and my PMDG QOTS II version is 3.00.9431 (according to the PMDG operations center app, the latest version)

The FS2Crew config manager shows version 1.4.

I also checked my controls set up now, and there is no axis assigned to flaps extend or retract. The only thing connected to the flaps is two separate buttons on my CH Eclipse Yoke, one for flaps extend incrementally and one for flaps retract incrementally. I use FSUIPC for all my axis and button assignments.

I might try to disable the flaps assignments and see if it works better then.

Kyrre Andersen

Hi Bryan,

I have now tried to disable the flaps assignment on my yoke, as well as checking that the flaps on the PMDG plane is not connected to my yoke or throttle quadrant in any way.

I did one flight with vocie control and one with button control. In both cases the FO replied "Double check that please", even though the flap setting was correct.

Prior to this I tried to uninstall and reinstall the FS2Crew software. It might be something in my setup, but I haven't been able to figure it out yet.

There is also one more thing I noticed, and this happens during flaps retraction while climbing. Whenever I reach the flaps up speed during climb, I call for flaps one. The FO confirms this and starts retracting the flaps. Just as the flaps are in transit between "one" and "up", he suddenly states "flaps one green" for some reason, even though the flaps are in transit towards up. Some seconds after the flaps are up (as seen on the upper EICAS), he says "flaps up" (which is correct). I cannot understand why he would say "flaps one green" whilst the flaps are in transit between flaps one and flaps up.

Not that these things are such a big issue, but still worth mentioning.

Best regards,

Kyrre Andersen

HI Bryan,

Yes, I can try to use another model. For the time being I have uninstalled both FS2Crew and PMDG 747. I will reinstall them now and see if that helps.

It also came to my mind that I have been using a custom panel state (on the basis of the long turnaround panel state). I didn't change much, only disconnecting the external air and changing the default value of the altimeter from In.Hg to hPa (since I mostly fly in Europe). I can't see how that would interfere with FS2Crew's ability to read the position of the flaps..but..I'll see how it goes after a fresh re-install.

Hi Bryan,

I do not use saved situation files. After a full reinstall, the FO still gives the same odd reply to the flaps challenge. Also, after takeoff, during flaps retraction from 5 to 1 - he suddenly states "Flaps 20 green", even though the flaps are in transit from 5 to 1..

I have checked every kind of assignment on my yoke, throttle quadrant and rudder pedals - and there is nothing tied up to the flaps. Nothing in the default controls menu within P3D and nothing in FSUIPC. Even after a complete re-install of both the 747 and FS2Crew, the oddities with the flaps persists..

Hopefully another user have experienced the same..
