What options are important in Prepar3d 8gb RTX 2070 Super

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I would like current 2080 users to chime in as 2070 Super is pretty much similar to 2080 card in terms of performance.

What are the big gpu options which help in Prepar3d.  I am coming from 4GB 980 GTX,

Which options are useful for using 8gb of VRAM - I do believe the hi res texture option is a good option to use.  What other options are really going to use the card's gpu

Yes, I do know I do not expect all the sliders to the right and expect full speed.  As that will never happen with the current P3D engine.

I am trying to figure out the options and then I can optimize it further to work real well with Rift S.

Thanks,

The goal should not be to "use up the GPU"..

My goal would be to get the best possible visuals in P3D without using up the GPU..

That way, you should be getting good performance and smooth flight.

High res terrain textures look great in P3D, so yes, definitely use that setting!

The settings that can load up a GPU include:

4k screen resolution, shadows, clouds, lighting, shaders etc

all of which are optional

Also to add to Bert's message, having a high LOD setting will impact your GPU hugely.  Use the smallest setting you are OK with, remembering that in real life flying, terrain does not look sharp out to the horizon, but slowly blurs with distance from your POV, even in the flight levels.  And I have so many real life pictures, taken from our incredibly clear desert, that prove that.  In my real life flying, even an airport I knew well, Falcon Field, was hard to spot on a crystal clear day without landmarks even though I would take off from it and know exactly the direction it should be in--much has to do with atmospheric "lensing" which is a function of your altitude and angle of view.

That is why, even on our clear days in Phoenix where I can see the San Francisco peaks as soon as I take off on a commercial jet, more than 100 miles from our aircraft, I cannot make out fine detail on them like some try for with their LOD settings.  I also use a mid range AA setting which reduces GPU workload, and no Nvidia tweaks other than one or two related to Vsync.  Same goes for my Aniso filtering, which I keep at just the right setting so I do not have jiggly textures while flying.

I do not like to tweak--once I have P3D (and Xplane) running like I want to see them, I only set up for the highest detail my rig can sustain at my target fps of 25, which for me is the crossover between stuttery and movie visuals, although many modern movies are now 60 fps, which my sim can sustain in the flight levels but I do not bother, since in the flight levels the difference between 25, 60 or 100 fps is insubstantial to me.

I clocked P3D with full settings once in the flight levels at 150 fps, because I was flying over photo scenery sans autogen.  I only prefer P3D's autogen trees anyway, the buildings for me are blah compared to Xplane11's, because they throw multi story commercial buildings in residential areas and even though I still have Landclass Assistant (which I created way back for FS2002 and beyond) which can change those areas to all residential, it is too much a chore since I fly all over the world, rather in just one area.  So trees are fine, especially 4.5 improved trees, planted, lol, to relieve us from the greenhouse gasses our sim aircraft cause....

Here's a dropbox link to a complete settings spreadsheet I put together for P3Dv4.5 as well as Active Sky and my complete hardware set-up:

                       https://www.dropbox.com/s/vs3knubixs6sjrx/P3Dv4.5 Settings Chart 7-24-2019.xlsx?dl=0

It has a column of settings for my 4K monitor set-up and one for my Oculus Rift-S.

I also colored coded some of the settings to illustrate whether its a GPU or CPU hitter, these performance factors are a bit old based on P3Dv3 but still are pretty good indicators.

The settings for P3Dv4.5 are optimized for my rig but they are a good baseline on what I change to get good performance in my Rift-S.

Also I suggest you use the Oculus Debug Tool included in the Oculus software folder to set the pixel density (PD) to 1.5 -1.7 and disable ASW.

You need to launch and set the debug tool settings before launching P3D Oculus VR. If you want to change the PD setting close P3D VR make the change hit return and then go back into P3D and select Oculus VR again.

Good Luck

Joe

The best tip/trick someone posted was with a 1070+/my card you can set auto gen trees to max with no FPS impact. It’s works great.

P3d engine needs an overhaul period.  It is really not maximizing this gpu well at all.  It is good don't get me wrong but my i7-5820K 6 Core at 4.4ghz (with quad ddr memory channels) should be decent with performance (and it is) - it just not like DCS performance (omg that is something else).

So far I have been able to max vram to 4.1gb out of 8gb.

Though 10-12 fps loss happens when AIG is enabled.....hmm

Really, I can certainly not confirm this?

It should be : trees to max with almost no performance loss in not too heavy scenery....

Joe, brilliant spreadsheet! I am however more than a little surprised at your choice of settings with your hardware spec. I am running a brand new RTX 2070 Super on a very old chip (X5670 xeon) overclocked to 4.3Ghz. I have extensively tested with shadows at all settings in high intensity areas like New York, my conclusion is the card is easily coping with it and I do not get any noticeable performance impact from running:

P3D Settings for RTX2070

The card never seems to get beyond 40% utilization except when in VR. With the Vertx DA62 I get between 50-70fps in exterior view and in the cockpit 30-60fps. In really intense areas like New York or London it will sink to between 20fps-45fps.

I am in addition using Tomatoshade which contributes to a slight loss of frames rate.

The thing is it is totally smooth, no stuttering. Lots of eye candy and shadows at anything less than Ultra is really missing out IMHO. Same with Reflections. Those details add a great deal to the immersion factor. Given your hardware, you should perhaps retry turning up shadows and reflections and see if you get any performance hit to speak of.

Honestly, running shadows on Low or Medium for distance is also a massive immersion breaker.. not seeing cloud or terrain shadows where their should be out to the horizon looks so bad.

Yes Really, or I would not have posted it.

Well, I never drop below my locked so it's a matter of how you set up your own sim.

But when I tested it with unlimited FPS did not drop at all with tress set to max. Everyone is free to try it, if it works for you, great if not! never mind.

It might be down to how well other settings are balanced./srug.
