ORBX night lighting sparse

Recommended Posts

So, I've been having this issue for a while now and it's starting to bug me. ORBX night lights are very sparse. I use ORBX Global/Vector/openLC NA/openLC EU and a few ORBX airports but the night lighting seems very sparse. And yes i use the latest ORBX libraries and used the night lights configurator yet the lights are still sparse. It seems like there are lava colored patches in some areas where lights are supposed to be but they aren't there. Library insertion points are set as default. The first screenshot is at KVPS and the second screenshot is at KFLL. The issue persists in Europe as well.

For comparison, here's a user named flywithdiduch on reddit and his night lights are completely different.

Well it partially solved the problem. The ground isn't so horrible this time.

The lights also seem different. I guess i'll stick to this instead.

It would be good to know what you did, as I have experienced the same

It is really an  annoying behavior to to tell the community having found a solution for an issue but not sharing the details ... 👎

Maybe he just could not because the solution is not to be mentioned on AVSIM? Thougt about that? There are not many things that do change the lighting in P3D. 😉

But I hope ORBX is updating AUv2 with their excelent "extended night lighting". That would be the better solution for me.

I asked at ORBX about the extended night lighting for AUv2 and was told that they are planning on adding that in as service pack.  I was a bit surprised to see that it wasn't part of the product to begin with.

My guess is the original poster probably adjusted his AG viewing distance or density for trees.  I believe the normal night lights for ORBX are actually considered to be AG trees

Reinstallation of all ORBX products seems to have fixed the ugly lava patches. At least it did for me. But the sparseness of lights still seems to happen. You can uninstall from FTX central then delete the ORBX folder in Prepar3D v4 and reinstall via FTX Central. I believe the ugly patches is from the Default Prepar3d scenery and for some reason my night textures are overlapping ORBX's ones.

Replying from my phone so not sure how this will come out.  ORBX night lighting is embeded in the autogen, specifically trees.  If you have those settings reduced, the night lighting will also be reduced.  I actually increase my settings for greater night lighting.  In your prepar3d.cfg file change:

 AUTOGEN_TREE_MIN_DISTANCE_TO_LOD=2500.000000

To

AUTOGEN_TREE_MIN_DISTANCE_TO_LOD=6500.000000

Albuquerque

vK5tV1L.jpg

Chicago

AbJJ5LH.jpg

Los Angeles

vgFpOFL.jpg

The only issue remains, and has yet to be resolved is the distance night lighting is rendered.  The above tweak helps, but you are limited to the range that autogen (trees) render.

Hmmm interesting. I might turn up my autogen tree density and see if that helps with night lighting.

EDIT:
i turned up tree density. Here it is:

I was thinking of mentioning another product for night lighting which is out there, but it seems the problem has been resolved by another method.. :cool:

There certainly are other products out there that will help even beyond what I have done.  If people don't want to spend extra money or add on what in my opinion is a complex add-on, then just an understanding of how Orbx lighting works and how to tweak in that environment is a good start.  Took me awhile to figure it out, and I understand the frustrations.
