F-18 down in Star Wars Canyon aka Jedi Transition

Saw this on a few news outlets today and the condition of the pilot is unknown to the press but apparently 7 civilians/spectators/hikers were injured from the crash.

For those unaware of Star Wars Canyon or the Jedi Transition, it’s north of China Lake and the Navy/Marines (maybe Air Force) as well use the canyon to fly though at low level for training purposes. Many people hike up there, which is not off limits, to take video or photographs of the jets passing through. Similar to the Mach Loop across the pond.

A lot of really cool videos can be found on YouTube if you search Star Wars Canyon or Jedi Transition, some even have audio posted from the pilots taking to controllers before making the pass.

As of this am they are still searching for the pilot. Not looking good. 😕

Thank you.

Really??

I’m assuming the pilot ejected and considering that the canyon is a pretty confined area, you wouldn’t think it would be that difficult.

Unless, this is one of the situations like the A-10 pilot years ago who ditched his A-10 in the mountains in Colorado on purpose if I recall correctly.

Hopefully not and the pilot is ok. Since there were spectators in the area, I'm surprised there’s not video of the incident.

One of my very best friends has flown the canyon many times. He says that there is almost zero time to pull the eject lever if things go wrong. He and I both pray that this is one of the cases that, in spite of the odds, that  the pilot is safe..............Doug

I just saw that as well on another news outlet.

Its ashame he didn’t make it but as W2DR said, going in there at high speed doesn't leave much of a margin for error or time to eject. Since he crashed near where people were he might have take the jet in to the canyon wall sacrificing himself to save the onlookers.

Prayers to the survivors and family.
