FSX-SE has been randomly crashing for the past few days

Both reports show MSCTF.dll is the faulting module (a Windows 10 file).  Right click the FSX icon on your desktop and right click on Microsoft Flight Simulator and select Properties.  You can also go to your FSX-SE folder and look for FSX.exe.  Right click on FSX.exe and select Properties.  Click Compatibility tab and click on Change settings for all users then make sure "Run this program as an administrator" is checked.  See page 12, AVSIM CTD Guide for images on how to accomplish this task.

Running FSX as Admin was actually one of the first things I did- while troubleshooting FPS problems, I found that the tweaks "Run in compatibility mode for Windows XP- SP3" and "Run this program as an administrator" improved FPS for me.  Upon reinstallation, I applied it immediately.  I didn't select "change settings for all users" since I'm the only user on this computer, however reading what you put I decided to try it.

I was more hopeful about the flight last night.  FSX would only stay open for about 10-20 minutes before crashing, but last night it stayed open for an hour and then crashed due to a seemingly unrelated problem.

I'm trying to run a different flight now, I'll post back later with results.

FSX was developed with the Windows Vista OS which became Windows 7 soon thereafter.  Running as Administrator is the only solution I know of for the MSCTF error.

I'm running Windows 10.

Anyways, I ticked "Change settings for all users" and I was able to complete a flight from MMMX-KIAH without any freezing/crashing.

Now, I keep a detailed list of every addon I install into my Flight Simulator.

Your tweaks seemed to have fixed it, thank you.  If I have any more problems, I should be able to post here.  I'm going to try limiting what I install into FSX now.

I know the OS but you said you changed the compatibility to Windows XP.  Why?

Pardon the late reply- I read that, since FSX was mostly optimized for XP, setting the compatibility to XP SP3 will improve FPS.  I've personally tried it, and (at least on my previous install) it does improve FPS.

This is unbelievable.

FSX continued crashing on my first reinstall.  I uninstalled it and then reinstalled a second time.  I simply clicked "Run this program as an administrator" and "Run in Compatibility mode for WIndows XP- Service Pack 3"

It crashed after 10 minutes.

I'm switching to FlightGear.

This is not true.  It was developed with the Vista OS which soon became Windows 7.  Get rid of the compatibility mode.  Plus what if you have an add-on that was developed for FSX/Acceleration using Windows 7 and using the Microsoft.net's for Windows 7 and Microsoft Visuals for Windows 7.  XP never used those.  Dotnets are used by developers to make sure the addon runs properly.  Make sure you have Microsoft Visual 2005 and Microsoft.net 3.5 installed.  You should see the installation of dotnets in the Add/Remove Programs folder but, if not, look in C:\Windows\Microsoft.net\Framework and it will show you all that are installed.  See pages 26-28 in the AVSIM CTD Guide.

I'm still mentally debating whether or not to try reinstalling a third time.  FlightGear is okay, but graphically could use some improvements.

I'm not sure if it was the Compatibility Mode setting, I've had it on since around Spring and before now, I haven't experienced many crashes.  However, today after reinstalling that was the only thing I did.  There couldn't have been anything else FSX-wise that could have crashed it- other than problems with Windows or my computer itself.

As far as the Framework/Visual components, I have them all installed.

I unchecked "Run this program in Compatibility mode for Windows XP"

There was yet another crash, but with an error report.

If I read it correctly, the failing module is API.DLL.  I looked it up in the CTD guide and it appears to be related to OOM issues- I've gotten them in the past, but it always came with an error MESSAGE on-screen.  Here, there is none.

In this case I doubt it was caused by running out of memory.  The api.dll is used to start up fsx.  Are you starting up as an Administrator?  It loaded successfully.  Have you tweaked your FSX.cfg with the Bufferpool or AffinityMask tweaks?

No.  I just redownloaded it.  I haven't installed a single addon or repaint- just the base, vanilla game.

It still crashed.

I unchecked compatibility mode for XP but kept the Run as Administrator option.  It doesn't seem to work.

On the FSX-SE site, one person had the exact same issue.  He was told to run the application as an Admin and he responded FSX-SE was working again.

That's what I've been doing this whole time, even with the reinstalls.  However, one specific thing I didn't do was "Change settings for all users"

I don't know if that'll change anything since I'm the only user on this computer, but I'll try later and report back with results.

When you reinstall FSX- SE  are you first deleting the folder containing the fax.cfg and scenery.cfg?

It seems like it.  The .CFG modification dates are the same as when I first launched FSX again.

After 45 minutes of flying out of KEWR in a 747, it's crashed again.  AppCrashView shows nothing

do have "Run as Administrator" for all users.  Compatibility mode is turned off, although this changed nothing.  I haven't added a single scenery file, or aircraft, or repaint.  It continues to crash.

I'm completely out of ideas.
