Boxed letters on the FMC / MCDU

Recommended Posts

On the keypad of the FMC / MCDU of both on Boeing and Airbus aircraft, the letters E, N, S, W often have a box around them. Anyone know what that's about?

Loooonggg time ago, there where no GPS in airliners, and you were supposed to enter coordinates in the FMC for IRS alignment.

Those boxed letters were really convenient. I guess they didn't made a new version of the hardware since.

Best regards,
