XP11 is turning displays off (but still hear sound)

Recommended Posts

I'm having odd issues where XP11 will be running fine and then wham!  I lose both of my displays.  I can still hear the aircraft's engines and windows sounds.  I tried running my GPUz and CPUz/Realtemp while I was playing and there was nothing out of the ordinary just before this black screen.

I have updated my GTX 980 drivers to the latest WHQL.  Has anyone ever heard of something like this?  Is it a OpenGL related hardware problem?  A video card problem?

oh I checked window event viewer and it looks like this:

Fault bucket 1293515168063254665, type 4
Event Name: APPCRASH
Response: Not available
Cab Id: 0

Problem signature:
P1: dwm.exe
P2: 10.0.18362.267
P3: 6468b8f9
P4: StackHash_7f4f
P5: 0.0.0.0

P7: e0464645
P8: PCH_EF_FROM_KERNELBASE+0x00000000000FF65F
P9:
P10:

I googled dwm.exe and it's a Windows desktop manager...responsible for the graphics/aero portion of Win10.

Honestly this "crash" could be anything....faulty video card, PSU ugh...  these are hard to track down but I'm open for any explanations!

Are you sure it's not simulated hypoxia? That leads to a black screen with sounds still running in the background.

No this is like a sudden turning off of the monitors...the blue boxes that say display come on (like if the monitor is unplugged)

Video card is factory over clocked 980 FTW)...CPU is over clocked.

What is DDU?

Just as a heads up, in the options of DDU you have options for both a safe mode prompt when starting it and to kill the automatic installation of drivers. Makes the process a whole lot simpler.

And adding to that, if you want to install Nvidia drivers without all the unnecessary junk and hidden telemetry, run this little application on the driver .exe you download, crates a repackaged file with only the stuff you need;

@Rob_Ainscough Hey Rob I tried to load optimized defaults in BIOS and I'll I see is a steady hypen top left of screen and nothing happens.  I powered off my PC then back on and settings didn't change.  Does this mean the CMOS battery is very low or dead?  I haven't done the driver thing yet - been so busy.  But I found it very odd I couldn't even reset bios.  Also been having the same exact crash in BF4 and XP11.  The displays actually turn off and go to standby mode but I can still hear game sounds.

Have you tried running one monitor only?

Maybe it's a bad cable or connector somewhere. PSU - GPU power cable, video out - monitor power cables or else...

Before I do that I decided to look at evga precision 1x.  I noticed my video clock was way up there...higher than the FTW card specs should be.  Maybe the previous owner had someone set.  Anyway I pulled the base clock back -150 and I tried a lot of BF1, BF4 and XP11/P3D today and nothing crashed.  I hope it was that simple.

sounds to me your current xplane rendering settings are beyond what your video-card can handle, the card is overheating and protecting itself by going off. Same thing happened to me on the past.

i am not familiar with your card but there should be an app to monitor GPU temp

you should try lowering your xplane rendering settings to minimum to confirm issue is gone

Other things to check

-Room temp

-Dust covering the components, fans, etc. will decrease the cooling capacity considerably, a good clean if required will cure this.

Your screens turned off and you could still hear sound?
