New hardware less VAS. Help needed...

Recommended Posts

Hi,

this is for FSX SP2 boxed only.

After almost 5 enjoyable years on a AMD 8600/4GB RAM and a GTX970 under Win7 I decided to get new hardware. So now I have my i7/8700 (HT=on), 16GB RAM, a RTX2070 and a SSD, WIN10 and I'm heavily disapponted.

When I start a flight in EDDF with any of PMDG's I'm running out of VAS within seconds. Using the SceneryEditor disconnecting all not needed airports, using all the best practice tweaks it's still not possible to do a flight out of EDDF (Aerosoft's Mega Airport V1 or V2). I'm not using ORBX at all. What makes me wonder is the fact that everything worked well under WIN7.

Any hints? Any help?

Best

Hans

I upgraded to my current system (see signature for system specs) and had no problems running FSX so you certainly have an issue somewhere.  When I upgraded, I also went from Windows 7 to Windows 10.  I do know that the commercial version of EDDF is hard on any computer system but works better with Prepar3Dv4 as 64 bit applications have unlimited VAS. I did try to replicate your crashes at Frankfurt but had no issues whatsoever.  Here is my FSUIPC VAS report:

I used the default EDDF, default scenery, and the PMDG 737 (you did not indicate what you had loaded other than EDDF and any PMDG aircraft).  I was able to takeoff, land, and taxi to a Gate.  I would suspect I would have had issues using the payware EDDF (which I own but have not reinstalled).  I used UTLive for my AI program and did not have any real weather program turned on.  My settings are the settings shown in the AVSIM FSX Configuration Guide (link in my signature) and I use the NVIDIA Inspector program to manage the graphics.  I do not use Autogen as I believe that feature is totally unrealistic.  I do know that high Autogen will deplete VAS very fast.  Also AI settings.  I once loaded a GA aircraft from Carenado at KSTL using Seattle X and, while sitting on the runway for takeoff, I was looking at the AI loading and noticed my VAS was going to zero very fast as each AI was loaded.  It finally crashed in less than a minute.  I made some adjustments in UT Live and lower the amount of AI to 40% and have not seen the crash since.  So high AI settings will also cause issues.

I am going to move this over to the FSX Forum as you will probably receive more attention to your topic.

Best regards,

Jim

Are you sure that SP2 is installed?  My boxed FSX came as the RTM version with SP1 and SP2 on the disk, so they had to be explicitly installed after running the RTM installer (as well as the SDK for each version in order).  If SP2 (and/or Acceleration) is not installed, the LargeAddressAware flag won't be set in the program's PE header, and thus the OS only allows it 2GB of VAS instead of the full 4GB...and you'll get an instant OOM just like you're seeing.

You might also make sure that MAX_TEXTURE_LOAD is set to no higher than 2048...some add-on installers will tweak that up to 4096, which is trouble in FSX.  And start with no traffic or wx and add those in later, one at a time.

Edit: I just loaded up the PMDG 737-800 at Aerosoft's EDDF (v2.11), UT2 traffic set to 40% commercial, "fair" weather and I have VAS remaining fluctuating between 544-675MB remaining, the lowest is seen when I go to an exterior view and look 360 deg around the jet.  I'm using FSX:SE, GEX, and UTX Europe v2.  No weather add-on.  This is with Win 10 Pro v1903 running on a 5 GHz 9900K with 32GB RAM, 11GB 1080Ti video card to a 2560x1440 display.

I could be wrong about this and by all means I don't want to sound like a smart a$$ or derail a thread, but I believe it does have a maximum VAS of 18 Exabytes or less. Now that's a humongous amount of RAM by today's standards, but I'm old enough to remember the days when IBM sales reps would visit computer stores and state that the 4GB limit of 32 bit OS2 was as good as unlimited.  Unlimited it a moving target so to say, and I predict in 2-3 decades gamers and flight simmers will be bumping up against the VAS limit for 64 bit OSs.  🙏

You are correct.  There is a limit but the amount I read is 7 Terabytes which means it is unlimited today as there is no 7 terabyte M2 or SSD yet.

Oh wow; didn't realize it was that little. I'll revise my prediction to 1-2 decades then.  🤣

Given that one of the big benefits of 64-bit code is that you can memory-map the filesystem and have it automatically swapped in and out of physical RAM as needed, I wouldn't be surprised if that limit got raised pretty soon. It's not difficult (or expensive) to provision a machine with >8TB of storage.

Cheers!

I was wrong.  It's 8 terabytes, not 7 - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/gettingstarted/virtual-address-spaces

Doomday has arrived.

After so many years on FSX I finally switched to P3D V4 and it looks like I'm going to be happy again.

Do my part in the worldwide economy and buy my Addon's again.

Bye bye OOM's bye bye VAS outages.

Thanks for your comments and help.
