Has anyone taken a real ground school  course just for flight simming?

Personally I wouldn't spend the money. But if you just wanted to do some reading and gain a greater understanding up to a PPL level, I'd highly recommend Bob Taits books;

https://www.bobtait.com.au/ppl-products-page

I used his books to get me through my PPL over 10 year ago. There is some material in then (from memory) that is specific to Australia but the way they are written makes it super easy to understand all things aviation.

You may also want to look at the handbooks you can download (for free) from the FAA. They may not be as entertaining as some of the courses you can purchase (i.e. Sportys, King Schools, etc.), but they are a wealth of knowledge and a good reference.

The two books I read through when getting my PPL were the "Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge" and the "Airplane Flying Handbook"

The flight school I attended many, many moons ago had us buy the Jeppesen course material for ground school. Most of it, including the illustrations looked like it came right out of those FAA resources.

Those FAA pdf's should be all I need.

I concur. The FAA Handbooks quality has improved so much and costs lot less if you need a hardcopy ortherwise just download the PDFs

Here is a free ground school site

They also offer some of their online ground schools for free....

I am in Canada and did my PPL and IFR ground schools online with Pilottraining.ca ---- This was "really really" long 🙂 over 180 hours of video sessions and then Tests and course material.

I hate to say it but the dovetail flight school was a "mini" run through the ratings but was pretty decent for those that wanted to get a little extra help with the sim flying...
