Is 16Gb RAM Enough for Prepar3D v4.5?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Below is my setup, had been running smoothly until recently, just wondering if there would be any benefit to adding RAM.  I am thinking of building a new PC but I am not quite there yet.

Operating System:  Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

CPU:  Intel Core i7 4790K @ 4.50GHz (Haswell 22nm Technology)

RAM:  16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 799MHz (9-9-9-24)

Motherboard:  ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. Z97-A (SOCKET 1150)

Graphics:  NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti (MSI) 3071MB

SAMSUNG:  49" 4K Display (3840x2160@60Hz Native)

I have tried making settings according to this thread:

Thank you.

I am happily running p3dv45 in 8 gb of ram (1080p monitor),

So I would say that 16 gb is plenty..

16GB is more than enough.  I've tried it with 32GB...no detectable difference other than snappier reloads (when doing multiple restarts as part of development/experimentation) when using half of that 32GB as a disk cache.

I certainly wouldn't sink money into more DDR3 at this point.

The best way to know I guess is to monitor your current RAM usage during a demanding scenario and see if you close to hitting your 16GB.

My previous system had 16GB RAM and my new system has 32GB. I decided to go with 32GB because I was regularly using 11-12 GB of system RAM and thought it could help going with 32, but in reality, it hasn't changed anything. I am still using no more than 11-12 GB in demanding scenarios, but I have a 1080p monitor, things might be different in 4K.

Your current usage will tell you if you need more or not. Personally, I would keep that money for an eventual newer computer.

Betcha Rob can beat-up on 32gb of RAM... but then, his computers (and simming) seemingly happen from a parallel universe!:biggrin::biggrin:

Okay, thanks for the feedback gents.  I will have a look at the resource monitor and see what it shows.  I'm away for just under 2 weeks so I will not have a chance to work on anything.

I went ahead and purchased 32gb 4x8gb 3600mhz cl16

it I’ll be useful, glad I did as I can multi task while flying without any worries.

I went with 18gb 2 x 8 because the G.SKILL 4400mhz CL18-19-19 that I bought cost me nearly $500. 32GB would have been nearly double that.🤔

But I'll add that I don't have any issues with it. I might though. Who knows how much DRAM the next generation of sims will eat up?

2 x 8 = not 18

Wow! 26GB in use is huge. I just tried mine to compare. I don't use TE in P3D but I do have it in X-Plane. With the 777 (PMDG) departing FSDT KLAX in overcast conditions and setting that I wouldn't use for this scenario because my FPS was well below 30 I was using 8.25GB and had just under 5GB Standing by and I suppose 3 not in use. I typically see about 7GB of VRAM used but I do have a couple of shadow tweaks etc. in there that increases VRAM usage. Still I'll have to see where I stand with FS2020 and or P3D V5 and or XP12. Maybe I'll have to up my DRAM to 2 x 16 for a total of 36GB 😝

It's the new math.  Take the equation even further and you get:   2 x 8 = 18 +3 = purple.
