First ever flight

Recommended Posts

Guest Aidi

I read this article earlier on about a baby born in the back of a helicopterhttp://www.dailypost.co.nz/storydisplay.cf...condsubsection=It made me think to when i had my first flight... Like the story above it was by helicopter, but fortunatly i was 3 weeks old being taken to see grandparents!! The first flight i can remember was when i was about 5 years old, flying on the very same helicopterDo you remember your first flight, or when you were first taken on an aircraft?RgdsAidihttp://www.avsim.com/pages/0100/avsim_sig.jpg

1966--I was five years old, and was living in Southern California and hopped on board a PSA Electra from Burbank for a run up to SFO or Oakland--can't remember which. Until we moved to Northern California a year later, we regularly traveled by air to the Bay Area into both SFO and Oakland. So by my sixth birthday, I was so used to airplanes that instead of being glued to the window, I would fall asleep the minute I was on board.-John

Cool to read your experiences Aidi & John. Wish I could have ridden in an Electra! And I've never been in a chopper http://www.nextgenerationrecords.co.uk/boa...con_redface.gifMy very first airplane ride was in a Fokker F27 and was the start of many a flight in that great machine. To this day I can hear that legendary Rolls Royce Dart whine in my head! Now that sounded like a turboprop...:)

Likewise, i would too love to fly in an electra. Those days of aviation are beyond most of use these days. As for helicopters, i would hate to think how many different types i have flown in. Best (an most dangeroous) experience was flying at 50ft AGL across Baghdad in a RAF Puma.. Used to do the flight every week for 6 months, and it would blow my mind everytime. Nothing will likly ever top those rides.slightly O/T, but did you know there is an amazing soundset for the RR Dart for MSFS? It has to be one of the realistic (well i think it is) soundsets available.Goto the Allied Flightgroup website here:http://www.alliedfsgroup.com/?RhZbkYiCnAlN...UpmyoUpCmqZz5wZDownload the NAMC YS-11 Japan Air Commuter. Make sure you read and understand the manual or you will cook the engines very quickly!! Or, you could copy the soundset out and put them in a similar multi engine plane to experince the sounds.http://www.avsim.com/pages/0100/avsim_sig.jpg

4 years old or so, flew a Tarom Il-18 (looked that up later, didn't know at the time, don't worry) from Amsterdam to Constanta and back. Was the first time ever for my parents too, and they got lost in the airport. We were helped on board after the aircraft had disconnected from the jetway using boarding stairs, I remember being carried by the pilot (though I guess it was the purser). On the flight back the entire complement of passengers was kept in isolation for 2 days because of a suspected viral infection which had broken out in Romania at the time.My sister's kid has it even earlier, he took his first flight 4 months before he was born :)

My first flight was when I was about 10 years old. Went "solo" on a Dan Air Viscount from Prestwick to Isle of Man, spent a week in the rain and flew back on a Dan Air HS 748. Aahh the memories!Next flight, believe it or not, was around 11 years later...went on honeymoon to Jersey on board a BIA Dart Herald - remember them?!?!My parents can beat this though...back in 1955 they went on their first flight on honeymoon to the Isle of Wight on a Dragon Rapide. They were separated on board to distribute the weight @-@ . The old dear was not amused :-lol

My first flight was on a DC 4 from San Francisco to Honolulu in 1953. I was three years old. Don't remember a thing about it. The first flight I do remember was the exact same flight two years later in 1955. That was one rough flight. And since then, I have lost track of the types of aircraft I have flown in. I do remember helicopter time in SH-3A - D's and UH1's. I also have an hour or so in HC-2's.

I was about 5 or 6 years old and it was a Dan Air Comet 4b or 4C from Gatwick to Cyprus. Being young I was more than a little nervous of flying but I remember feeling much better when I heard over the tannoy that the pilot was Captain Kirk......to young to wonder what on earth he was doing on an airliner!!!Grum

I was probably about four or five and flew with my parents from Ottawa to Winnipeg to visit my grandfather. I think it was a DC9. I definitely remember looking out the window at takeoff. We came home by train. The next two flights came from contests I won through a local radio station. The first was a flight over the city in a Bell 47 "traffic" helicopter; the second was a flight over the city in a Vickers Vanguard. (That's about the last thing I won in my life!)
