Autopilot NAV mode issue?

I'm having trouble getting the autopilot to lock into a VOR. it continues past the needle if it hasn't met up with it, or turns off course if its already on the needle. i was looking for something to switch it over to GPS. didn't find anything. Heading mode is working in a pinch, but this is rather irritating. am i overlooking something, or is this a bug?

 

UPDATE: i moved the nav needle until the autopilot switched to NAV ARMED. i then spun it back to its original course. NAV CPLD was engaged and it worked fine after that.
