NZ-NI (from Whangarei to Gisborne) - in the ATR

Featured Replies

Although I love flying VFR on Orbx's NZ-NI/NZ-SI, I do not have any detailed airports, in my SIM, for these two islands. So, I supplemented my NZ-NI with 2 new airports (NZWR Whangarei and NZGS Gisborne - from Orbx SALE). Below are a few sample images from part of my trip lifting off from Whangarei en-route to Gisborne (after a banking right turn). The plane is my recently acquired Carenado ATR-72 (which I'd mentioned (and shown a shot of) in one of my earlier posts).

These two airports, here, are historically significant from the perspective of New Zealand's discovery and explorations. Gisborne's Kaiti Beach (east of the city center) is the place where British navigator Captain James Cook had made his first landing in New Zealand on the Endeavour, in October 1769, and then, two days later, landed at Poverty Bay. Captain James Cook and the crew of the Endeavour were also the first Europeans to sight the Whangarei Harbour entrance on 15 November 1769.

My (this) flight is in the "Pause" Mode, at this time, due to a few other "non-aviation" related issues and emergencies...🙂...plus, I still need to figure out a couple of "teething" and "learning" problems with this aircraft!...So, I hope to do a Part II of my story in future. In any case,  I hope, you enjoy, these few images from this beautiful part of the world with this lovely aircraft (in the striking "All Black" NZ livery). Thanks for your interest.

Great shots. Great plane. I especially like the cockpit view in shot 3. I liked Carenado's ATR-42 so much, it was a no-brainer for me to get the ATR-72 as well!

John

Did you get it to fly an LNAV navigation mode or HDG mode? I can never somehow get my ATR72-500 to follow the Flightplan in LNAV and have to manually keep changing the HDG.

John: Thanks! So, you have now both the "shorter" and the "stretched" versions of the ATR...that sounds good to me!

Hi Rick:

Here, so far, I've only used the HDG mode...(This is because, for this post, I wished to (manually) track the eastern coastline of NZ-NI for this flight (NZWR->NZGS) - (the coastlines of NZ being pretty!). So, I've not yet used its FMS/LNAV based navigation. However, on their CJ2/H850 planes, I recall being able to use the NAV buttons for LNAV mode (their CDUs being similar).

But, I do plan to explore this ATR plane more in the coming weeks...and see if I, personally, run into any issues...I'll let you know...Thanks for your interest and inquiry!
