December 26, 20196 yr After more than 3 years with my Acer Xr34, I decided to go 4K with my new 9900k build. Went with the BenQ PD3200. The BenQ is a great monitor. I just think I miss my ultrawide. Now, I am finding myself doing endless research on ultra-wides and even super ultra-wides. I think I want to go back to UW but wanted suggestions on what the best ones are for P3D's going into 2020. I definitely want it to be an upgrade over my XR34, but obviously won't be 4k and I am ok with that. My budget is around $1000. 80% of use is P3D and the rest of gaming are common titles such as COD, RDR2, etc. Thoughts?
December 26, 20196 yr If you want another ultra-wide that's something better than your previous one for P3D, take a look at one of the G-Sync monitors like the Dell or Acer 34-inch 3440x1440 21:9 displays. G-Sync really rocks P3D. The Dell is on sale now at Micro Center for $650. A large-format 4K display would give you both ultra-wide and 4K...it's a great way to do P3D, space permitting. A good 55-inch TV is well within your price target as well. I chose that size because the pixels are barely discernible at a 33-inch viewing distance. December 30, 20196 yr Moderator @avi8tir, have you thought you might miss the extra sharpness a UHD monitor gives you? I've never known anyone move down a resolution for the sake of extra width. Your choice of course but your topic title says "I think I miss" which suggests you're not really sure. Always best to take time over these decisions. The PD3200U is a superb monitor and you'd have no problem selling it but 1440 vertical pixels versus 2160 is a big drop. Ray (Cheshire, England). It’s the pixels/inch that determine the sharpness more than the actual number of pixels in the display. The UW monitors are wide but not very high so it’s like looking at a postbox view of a higher resolution display. For example, the Samsung C49RG90 is like looking at strip out of a higher-than-4K resolution screen. December 30, 20196 yr Moderator @vortex681, that Samsung is bizarre for flight simming. Yes, I’m aware of the PPI rule and a 34” 3440*1440 is 110PPI. My 32” 3840*2160 BenQ gives 138 so it would be a drop in sharpness albeit not a huge one. That Samsung gives 109 - virtually identical to the 34” UW model. Just the price! Ray (Cheshire, England). Do you mean the Samsung 49 inch? I've had 3 X 24 inch for years and threatened to go to single monitor for years. Each time I've had the urge to make a change, I've backed down. I've seen the Samsung 49 in a local (Texas) Microsoft store with various games but not P3D or XP11. The Samsung 49 seemed like the perfect solution to avoid the dreaded bezels and yet retain most of the current width. Not being well versed on technical monitor considerations, I'd like to see a variety of YouTube options. Do you know of any sites to view comparisons?
December 30, 20196 yr Moderator @Les Parson, Yes, its aspect ratio is extraordinary. But as an alternative to 3 separate displays it would be a better solution and would probably improve your fps quite a bit. As far as making comparisons are concerned when I was considering a 32" 16:9 Sony HD TV as a monitor I took several screenshots and saved them as JPGs. Stuck them on a USB stick and visited a local TV dealer who was more than happy to display them for me. The images looked great and I was able to make a decision without having to second guess what it would look like. I would suggest you do the same and visit your TV store. It will be far more instructive than relying on YT videos. Ray (Cheshire, England).
