Freezing while loading add-on scenery

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, happy new year! Running into a problem I just can’t seem to fix. Seems others have run into this as early as V4’s release, but I can’t find any new posts about the topic less than a year old. Curious if someone had a magic fix.

When approaching an add-on airport, developer seems to make no difference whatsoever, just prior to the 30nm mark I get a freeze, about 8-10 seconds long, as the comp loads the airport. I then get another shorter freeze right about 10nm, and a small stutter right around 500 feet agl. The distance seems to be the same regardless of airport as well. I’ve went clean cfg with minimal settings, to much more aggressive settings, and it’s the same each time. I run a i-990kf, RTX2080, 32 gb ram, 2tb memory. I need to put a SSD in, but it also seems it was affecting people with SSD’s.

Now, this may just be something I have to live with until the tech catches up. Certainly we have had worse problems to deal with going back to fsx days. But it be awesome if I could make it a more immersive experience. Also, it’s a little problematic flying online events. Again, any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated!

Do you have FSUIPC installed?. Untick "Autosave" and see if you're lucky.

I have the same thing too.  I also seem to remember this being fixed early on in v4.  But I've never seen that fix.  I'm not sure what needs to be done(if anything can be done) to apply that fix.  I'll be curious to see what others have to say about this as well.

This is typically caused by the batch-loading of scenery and AI aircraft as they come into range of the sim's "reality bubble."  It's a fact of life, even on a cutting-edge system, and it becomes more prominent as you pile on complex airport add-ons, AI, and autogen, especially in forests and cities where the trees and buildings being loaded number into the thousands.  And piling stuff on is what those of us with high-end systems tend to do...alot!

That said, a recurring 8-10 sec freeze is pretty long on a clocked 9900K.  Having a very low, static FFTF setting can cause this, the cure being to increase it or use a utlility like FSPS' FFTF Dynamic to manage that parameter in real time.  Keeping ancillary add-ons confined to run on only a few cores (and none on the first two that P3D is using)  can also help with responsiveness when big gulps of scenery processing need to happen.

Regards

Awesome response. Thank you. Now, sorry for what might be a silly question. I wish I was better at this stuff. But, what’s the best way for me to keep the add-ons off the first two cores Prepar3d is working on? And I will look into FFTF! Thanks again!

You need to use an affinity mask on the utilities when they're run.  It can be done in a number of different ways...lots written about it in the forums here.  There is an affinity mask option when Invoking add-ons in a command line within FSUIPC, for example.  It can be done externally with a utility like Process Lasso.  Some add-ons can even be run remotely over the network, taking nearly all the workload off the sim machine.  There are pros and cons of the various methods depending on the program...something new to research and read up on!

I've been trying to reduce these long frames ever since v4 was released.  One thing I've found interesting when using Process Explorer to monitor activity is that the kernel activity (the orange activity as shown on the CPU activity graphs) goes very high during a long frame. However, I/O activity, which one would be associated with kernel functions, does not increase.  This means managing the core loading or getting faster I/O will not solve the problem.  What I think is happening is that the scenery object load routines do a scan of libraries, not once but every time an object is loaded.  Orbx eluded to this problem when they release the Orlando Cityscape and said they were working with LM on this issue.  This would explain why the kernel activity is high but the I/O isn't because the library data is cached but the routine still needs time to run through libraries multiplied by the number of objects.  Bottom line, poor software engineering.
