Lack of VR Blues.......

Idle thoughts.........

As a Tester, I really do appreciate all the great things Microsoft/Asobo have brought and are likely bringing to us in the future.

But having said that, I've had a growing feeling that I failed to acknowledge even to myself, until another tester (and also a personal friend) contacted me to ask if I was also getting bored already without vr.

As soon as he said it, I realized that I had indeed been feeling increasingly confined by the 2D screen, even with all the beautiful things I was seeing.

This opened a conversation where we speculated that sims that might otherwise be severely put on their back feet by competition with all this new Asobo tech, may yet find extended life if MSFS finds itself unable to offer an acceptable VR experience.

I really hope Asobo can offer the "full monty", up to and including VR, but on the other hand I won't be sad if other sims retain various openings allowing them seriously viable avenues to still compete.

It's going to be an interesting Year!!

I know that feeling well. At this point I leave xplane in vr mode, and is in vr at start up. I had fly inside for fsx, but got so frustrated with the constant view resetting, I just uninstalled it, and FSX. I presume it's the eastern European blood in my veins, lol.

I will be getting MSFS most certainly,  and not be word not allowed enough to play the "no vr no buy" game. I'm also not word not allowed enough to believe MSFS will never have VR. at a point, someone will do it.  After all,  FSX was released without VR. 😉

Bit of a hijack, but the content of your post seems particularly inducive to the "NDA compliant" question I'm asking around to alpha-testers, i.e.:

setting aside all the possible developments of current and future flight simulators, and (in your case) in the hypothesis that MFS will provide a satisfactory VR implementation/performance, do you think that, say, 1.5 years from now, your primary flight simulator will be the same it is now? Or to go a bit further, do you think you will still spend significant time in any of the current civil flight simulators?

I know the question implies a lot of unknowns, but it's just a fun way to survey the sentiment... ☺️

Most likely yes.

I've never been inclined to feel that "There can be only one" sim in my life.

I see a place for X-plane in particular if they can finally step up to the plate and stop lollygagging because there were no other choices.

As an aside, for years, some of us that also play games have asked about the graphics and other shortcomings of our current sims, and were more often than not informed in detail by community authorities how the current sims were at the pinnacle of simulation technology. (because of reasons)

Long time simmers explained with high surety why newer sims could not possibly do X.Y or Z without slideshow framerates, basing all of this on foundations I was never convinced were much more than surrender to the status quo.

Now, a community that for years had almost fully accepted the notion that little better was possible, is reversing to expect pure black magic from Asobo/Microsoft, with previous assertions of infeasibility thrown by the wayside in a twinkling.

To me, this brings me back to your question.

Again: Yes, I see myself still using other sims years from now, but only if the current champions show they're ready to chart a (clear) path into an abruptly much more competitive future.

The status quo is dead.

Having experienced VR, there's no way I can go back to 2D desk top flying. Guess it ruined it for me.

Not saying I won't buy MSFS 2020 but I will spend most on my flying time in VR X-Plane or P3D (while MS get VR online).

Thank you, a _really_ enlightening reply.

I've always been somewhat in the middle of the camp, not buying the "you can't compare flight sims with other games" excuse, while being still a little bit skeptical that we could see AAA visual quality + fps in a complex flight sim. But since the trailers of MFS came out, I've become more optimistic.

Well your arguments could be finally vindicated! ☺️ And that brings us back on topic, that MFS (or 3rd parties?) will hopefully get a good VR implementation sooner rather than later.

I fly a lot of DCS and IL2 with a sprinkle of Aerofly FS2. I have not started a flight simulator in non VR mode for 2 years...

Going back to "pancake" is simply not an option when you have tried VR. It adds x5 in immersion of actually flying an aircraft.

I'm not even giving the new sim another look until its playable in VR.

If I can't be inside of that new world I don't wanna see it through a 2D screen

One of the things I am keeping my eye on as I test is FPS, hoping to see what various settings combinations might be required to maintain the frame rates necessary for acceptable vr performance.....

OK, another 6 months later since the last post in this thread and we have all seen many many preview clips via numerous youtube vids since then. So I can say that i have seen MSFS2020 on my 2D television screen by now, and to be honest, i am already kind of bored before even starting it (so certainly waiting for VR capability before i jump in). I can also already immediately tell if something is taken from either FSX/P3D vs X-plane vs FS2020 (each have their own 'style' no matter how close FS2020 comes to imitating the real world). And to make it worse, i probably only have seen what MS wanted me to see.

As of August 18 (release day) I am not going to buy but will enjoy myself looking at the output from others. Surely there will be some footage taken flying over the Netherlands or other parts of the world i have not yet seen. Surely, after some time it will become clear if the sim behaves better with Intel vs AMD or with Nvidia vs Radion or that it does not make any difference whatsoever. And there will be, for the first time, complaints and points of criticism.

Gonna be interesting times.

I also am a tester. As much as I anticipated getting on board with testing, it held my interest for all of about 2 hours of flying. Just can't do it in flat screen anymore, it sucks.

I didn't order it on release because of this. Just today I placed my order, after speaking with a guy who has an inside track who said they are actively working on VR. Despite ordering the full boat version, whatever they are calling it, I won't even bother playing until they get the VR done.

Did that "inside track" give any hints about when? Will it be on release day?

I´m starting to be really interested in bush flying thru alaska after a few amazing jumps in alpha (always thought I was an IFR guy) and we need VR for that. Will be awesome. (I´m even rewatching northern exposure 😆)

Cheers

I feel very much the opposite. VR in flight sims has largely been a gimmick for me. The appeal of being inside the 3D world wears off when you realize how blurry and low fidelity the graphics are.

I find myself really excited about VR the first month I get it and then using it less and less. For it's not worth the hassle yet.

I enjoy seeing the flight controllers and printed cheat sheets I use while I'm flying over the gimmicky roller coaster effect of being in VR. It still feels off to be when using VR.

Plus it makes even less sense to downgrade the graphics of this new sim just for VR. When I've waited so long to get a sim that looks that good.

That depends on the HMD. The technology is evolving quickly.

I currently have the Pimax 5K and the HP Reverb. The Reverb is crystal clear, about what a 1080 monitor gives you, but I just can't handle the small FOV. I use the 5K, and while it's not as clear, it's far from blurry, and I can read all the gauges just fine. The upcoming Pimax 8KX is looking good, and when eye tracking finally comes it'll be really good. We also need the graphics cards to catch up, as the HMDs are currently out pacing them. Regardless, VR is in it's infancy yet, and there's no question that it's the future for simming, but like anything else, personal preferences will vary.

I have no idea what their timeline is, but I really doubt it will be on release day.
