P3D V4.5 settings and Scenery

Here with 4K I use FXAA + 4x MSAA + 4x AF and everything looks good.

A little shimmering in the far distance is even more real and like reality.  Look in real life at the tarmac in the distance when the sun is shining on it . Shimmering ...

The only "shimmering" I'm familiar with in P3D isn't remotely realistic - when you have a bunch of small objects (e.g. light poles) at a distance, they turn into black and white pixels rapidly flashing.

In the Prepar3D.cfg try:

[SCENERY]
SmallPartRejectRadius=3

Does 16x AF instead of 4x hurt performance too much? In what conditions?

Thanks

In my conditions :2x 4K as one wide screen + everything very detailed you do not see the difference between 4x AF and 16x AF. But performance wise it is about 5-7%.

If you do not see the difference between 4x AF and 16x AF when sitting for example on a runway or using a long taxiway, I am no longer surprised that you do not see a lot of shimmering neither ;-)

No difference. Perhaps the amount of 7.680 x 2.160 = 16.742.400 pixels for 1 view have something to do with that ... 🤓

I bet: 4K has the disadvantage of needing a lot of GPU performance while it has in the exact same time the advantage of allowing lower AF/AA modes and still looking very good.

BUT: in your case, the reason you get good results is the 2080Ti. I guess a 2080Ti would just enable me to run 4xSSAA and still having my 30FPS cutoff most of the time. But those 30% my 1080Ti performs less are simply missing in cloudy situations or with dynamic lighting active...

I really, really hope that the pricetag of the RTX 3080Ti will not be another step up compared to the 2080Ti. Otherwise I might say no to nVIDIA (again...).

I am using a 6.5y/o GTX Titan 6GB thru a 3440x1440 screen:  FXAA=0, 4x MSAA, 16x AF, and 4x DSP oversampling using nV Control Panel.  No jaggies, no shimmering.  There was huge improvement that came I think along with P3D 3.x that obviated the strong need for 4xSSAA thankfully.  And the DSP oversampling is just free visual improvement.  Unfortunately the old Titan can't do much w/ terrain/cloud shadowing w/o getting overworked and very fortunately those eye candies aren't often all that visible anyway.   It's amazing how much I still enjoy P3D on legacy hardware

I haven't seen any discernible performance impact from AF settings in at least 5 generations of graphics cards now.  The filtering is done very efficiently in the GPU.

I agree a little shimmering is fine and 16x has a pretty big impact on FPS depending on the scene complexity (clouds, London etc) so I use 4 or 8. SSAA helps a lot with shimmering and cockpit text but is expensive on FPS. I mostly use 4 or sometimes 2xSSAA.

What I can say skipping over all the Core 0 multi threading chat (covered in another post) is that on my machine and after many hours of work I've got a good balance with

HT OFF (big impact)
No AM setting (use all cores)
FPS Unlimited or 60FPS / VSync Off
FFTF 0.17

Nvidia Settings
Refresh = Adaptive (half refresh rate)
Texture Filtering = Performance

I simply do not see improvements with AM=254 and in fact I start to get blurries on long flights regardless of FFTF.
The instability just is not worth it although I confess I have not tried the Task Manager approach someone mentioned above.

During flight around London it moves from 15FPS to 30FPS with a 2 second stutter every 1/2 minutes. Average FPS is around 25FPS and is flyable, the new version of TE GB is a massive improvement on V1 and flying into Heathrow in an airliner is now fine,

The last stadium model that you zoom in on above seems to have a conflict with a generic 3D building. One more item to add to the growing list of issues...
