Try to convince me of VR

I try VR every time I go to a sim conference, so I understand what the fans are saying, but the resolution is just not fine enough for me yet. I would not recommend buying a VR setup without trying it first.

Isn't the whole point that you have 30 days to return?

The resolution is not what counts!

Kinda like saying I'll keep my monochromatic monitor because the resolution is better than CGA.

Maybe not for you, but it’s certainly an important factor for many people.

i only speak for myself, dont know about the "many" people

i doubt they will change my view on VR 😊 that's too late.

Does resolution seriously get better than this?

I honestly feel people don't really know what they want in resolution because they haven't reached any real VR experiences.

How can you know and see so much VR in a store demo in one day?

30 days are like the minimal to truly grasp what the current VR HMDs are in terms of resolution along with super sampling and various other software side visual options

Is crappy looking XPlane11 really the only sim people are judging VR from??

I've always said to those on the fence, that purchasing a headset with the intent to use it with only a single program is probably a waste.

Kind of like buying a huge widescreen with all the features..... solely to watch reruns of Dragnet.

Moreover, fiddling with it for a few moments in a store (or even at a show) is also not going to provide much more than a vague impression.

Were the lenses clean? Might the tester need glasses? did he/she wedge their glasses awkwardly in the headset?

Was the eye spacing optimal? What were the settings? Was the tested title showing off the headset to good advantage?

These sort of variables and more is why taking one home to play with it; not giving up after the first few hours, and using the device with multiple titles to get an overall feel for it is probably the best way to truly find out if vr is for you.

I would hope not. I enjoy it, but even fsx looks FAR more amazing in VR.

That right there is HUGE! as you know that a demo set isn't set correctly for you. Heck even after mine was delivered AND got my IPD from my Dr. I still had to find the right spot, even more idiotic, the measurements from my doctor were from a centerline, who would have guessed my eyes aren't equidistant from my snoze. 😉

But once ya get it set for you? Oh good heavens to Betsy......

Seriously, if you have the chance to try one you'll need no more. If I were you I'd order one anyway, you have 30 days to get your money back no questions asked. Well it is with Oculus. I presume HP have the same deal.

So, I finally decided to bite the bullet and got my Reverb yesterday. It definitely wasn't a walk in the park installing this thing but after about 3 hours of relentless pc configuration and tweaking Xplane (I only got xplane a few days ago so there's a bit of a learning curve with that alone) to get a decent performance and visual quality I was finally ready to start doing some basic flying.

And woah, I can definitely understand why a lot of you are saying there's no going back to 2d. I was positively surprised how easy it is to read the instruments in the virtual cockpit. My previous experiences with VR were just a few quick sessions with some of the older models which had very noticeable screen door effects. With Reverb the visual quality was very immersive. The colors could be a little deeper and having a little bit more fov would take this to a whole new level again but having said that, I've never been so immersed with a flight sim as I was yesterday doing just some basic landings and takeoffs in xplane default cessna on a default airport and scenery.

I'm looking forwardy to trying this on a next gen sim such as MSFS. I hope Asobo makes a serious effort with the VR implementation. I'm personally pretty optimistic about that. So far with everything they've shown, they don't seem to be doing anything half assed.

I'm slowly getting up to speed with VR in Xplane. I found some nice addons for keeping the performance in check and figured out how to get satellite overlays and autogen based on real life data. I was always a commercial airline simmer in FSX (I'm talking more than 10 years ago). I always found GA and VFR boring on 2d and found that I best get immersed when learning the procedures and instruments in large jets.

With VR things have changed. I'm suddenly enjoying these basic VFR flights in a small one engine more than I ever did when operating the study level jets in 2d. Things just feel so natural now, I can freely look around in the cockpit, the landscape below me comes to life even with xplane scenery that is showing its age a bit.  This might mean that there is still more mind blowing experiences awaiting for me when I move on to flying big jets again, not to even mention when MSFS is released with its next gen graphics.

I'm wondering if it would be worth it to try some of the other flight sims on VR? I'm hearing DCS is pretty good but I'm not that much into combat stuff so might just have to pass on that. P3d maybe?

I've heard Aerofly is made for VR and is fluid and stunning

Thanks for the tip, sounds promising. I hear they don't have the entire world modelled but that's actually fine with me if they deliver on the regions they have.

Both DCS and AeroFly FS2 run better than other VR sims, again this comes at the expense of not having full global/map scenery

Flying in FS2 feels smooth yet there isn't anything to look at and it lacks mood same with DCS.

I don't consider either of them full global world simulations

Er, that's because they're not. Tend to agree with the rest of it though. DCS is not really a tourist sim because you're a bit busy doing other stuff. Beautifully smooth, which allows formation flying that P3D can't compete with.

Having said that, I've not flown multiplayer in P3D unless it's in JoinFS. Maybe the built in MP is better. I'll have to try it.
