I think this a simple question but...

Most likely a stupid question, but... does Windows 7, have Windows Store?

I can state unequivocally that it will not run in Win7, period. If for no other reason that Win7 does not support DX11, which is absolutely required, it is a complete non-starter.

My P3Dv3 uses DX11, if I am not mistaken, and was working with 7 before I recently switched to 10.

I was dragged kicking and screaming into the world of Windows 10 from W7 when I got a new computer.  While there are still a few things that I strenuously dislike about Win 10, I'm finding that most things I do on the computer are more streamlined than in W7.

The Win 10 email app?  It does exactly what it says on the tin and I absolutely hated it.  Finally got it replaced with OEClassic.  Had to fight to get 8gadgetpack updated several times when a Win 10 update broke it.  One of the mandatory Win 10 updates broke the screen shots in one sim and it downloaded during metered bandwidth time because I didn't know to set hours for unmetered bandwidth.

I'm living with it for now.

Or should this be DX12, (typo I suspect)  Win7 does support DX11, but I guess since Win10 is the only future supported OS MSFS will naturally require the latest DirectX support and the hardware to match. Win10 is the only path.

I think MSFS runs on DX11 according to the devs at the moment, but W10 DX11 has been updated and not the same as W7 I think you will find.

I don't think you have to be the most tech-savvy person in the world to know that the latest flight sim made by Microsoft is likely to play nicer with the latest operating system made by the same company, as opposed to expecting an OS which granted, they also made, but which came out over a decade ago to perform similarly well with it. MS said as much too back when they were launching 10, stating that it was part of a drive to consolidate its operating system to be suited to a number of wider hardware applications rather than just being 'the next version of NT for desktops and laptops'.

The somewhat tablet-like/phone app front end of Win 10 is a bit of a visible indication of that aim, and whilst that might not necessarily appeal to desktop PC users very much, not least in being somewhat counter-intuitive when on a device which has a mouse and a full keyboard with a bunch of F keys, but you can pretty much faff around with the look and feel of 10 to make it enough like your old fave OS as to be good enough to please you in terms of looks as well as utility.

You might also be pleased to note that LM's Prepar3D runs noticeably better on Win 10 too than it does on preceding PC operating systems, for broadly similar reasons, which is another reason to use it if you like flight sims.

Flight sims have always pushed the computing envelope, which is exactly why MSFS used to be Microsoft's flagship demo program and one which typically grew with each iteration of their Windows OS (and will soon be that again). As such, it's rarely been a good idea to hold back on operating systems or hardware if you like your PC to be an aeroplane as well as something you can do spreadsheets on.

I was the world's second biggest fan of Win7. FInally had to bite the bullet and upgrade to Win10 on my core dev PC about a year ago, mainly because I needed Edge browser running fully native. Tried to find excuses as to why Win10 was worse- call it a bit of mSparksism if you like...

I agree. The only reason I upgraded from win7 recently is because it’s eol.

For all who are wondering, it’s still available as a free upgrade, it’s just not advertised as such. I installed windows 10, used my win7 product key and have a genuine copy. Cost nothing but my time, it even kept my files and settings no problem.

unless you have legacy reasons for running w7 I’d recommend upgrading. A few things take a little getting used to but it is otherwise not that different than w7.

This is an overrated issue.  I have just upgraded from 7 to 10 with the Media Creation Tool because of 7 EOL  and I don't see  much difference between the two UI to be honest ! You can have a tablet interface if you want to but it is a choice.

Will upgrade from W7 to W10 too in the next few days, but not as a happy camper :-). W10 might technically be superiour, but I dislike its UI, no window frames, many UI items I can't anymore (size of the title bar etc.), colours also can only be adjusted in a limited way. Try running windows of all programs that have it in a "dark scheme", you cannot see where they end, or where to grab the black title bar to move them. My mgr uses a black desktop, black console and editor windows, you cannot see where which window ends etc.

Despite all this, I will still upgrade, but will seek ways to change a few things to make it more bearable :-).

And when do you expect to get the Tech Alpha.

I started in a post previously that I was running Win. 7 and did not even register to be a tester, therefore I have nothing to do with Tech Alpha. I signed into the site at the INSIDER LOGIN originally and was able to for a period of time, but I no longer can from that point. I now can only login by going to the upper right hand corner for logging into the site now.

Well yeah, the website doesn’t care what OS you’re running.

It’s the app that’s used to download the Sim is what’s Windows 10 only.

This is a first party Microsoft title, so in all likelihood the Final PC version will require you to install it via the Windows Store app, which as far as I’m aware is Windows 8 and Windows 10 only.

Now Microsoft has branched out recently and has started putting some first party titles on Steam (Halo MCC, and Sunset Overdrive), so it’s possible it might end up on there eventually as well.

I know all the arguments, but if you are still on W7, just upgrade already.

W10 is just as good of an operating system at this point. This reminds me of all the FSX users who stuck with XP and trashed W7 for so many years.

Win7 vs. Win10 isn't the issue. I have MANY reasons to stay with Win7. The only thing I'm interested is will MS2020 run under Win7.

Intel 10700K @ 5.1Ghz, Asus Hero Maximus motherboard, Noctua NH-U12A cooler, Corsair Vengeance Pro 32GB 3200 MHz RAM, RTX 2060 Super GPU, Cooler Master HAF 932 Tower, Thermaltake 1000W Toughpower PSU, Windows 10 Professional 64-Bit, 100TB of disk storage. Klaatu barada nickto.

I replied about 20 odd posts up the page that you cannot even install the installer unless you are running Win10. Full stop.

It's not going to.
