Multiple warnings on attempting to download GTN 650/750 sim

Featured Replies

I was all set to get the garmin gtn sims off the reality-xp website, but on downloading got warning first from the web browser (chrome) and then on attempting to run the .exe, from Windows 10. These were not the usual "requires admin privileges to install" warnings, but instead more like "we have no idea who this publisher is, this may not be safe". I install lots of non-standard software (as a programmer and sw developer) so I'm used to getting exe's from non-commercial sites with no problems. These warnings were entirely unfamiliar and a bit alarming. I can provide screenshots if desired.

Hi,

Yes please do provide screenshots so that we can help assessing what it is about.

I can't see how to paste a screenshot here. But the windows 10 one says

"Windows Protected your PC

Windows Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk.
More info (link)

"

And then a button that says "Don't Run" and nothing else. I can't reproduce the Chrome one, I suppose because having bypassed it once, it remembers that I decided the site was OK.

One warning is understandable, if concerning. Two seems like asking for trouble.

In Windows 10, with the screen you want to share, press the Windows key plus shift plus S.  The screen will darken somewhat.  Press and hold your left mouse button.  Grab the area you wish to share by dragging your mouse pointer (I do so from upper left to lower right).  Release the mouse button and your highlighted area will be saved to the Windows clipboard.

In the message window here, position your mouse pointer  and merely right-click your mouse and choose paste.  See what I did just below with a section of your previous message?  It's an image of part of the message.  Click on it and it will expand the image.  Pretty simple...

Yeah, doesn't work, and in fact the website tells me "You cannot paste images directly. Upload or insert images from URL." in a banner across the comment area. Perhaps as a moderator or someone with more "points" others are able to do this, but I am not. Anyway, there's nothing to the Windows 10 warning except what I described. A square pop-up that blocks me from running the Reality-XP exe file I downloaded from the "e-commerce" button on the website. I have a standard Win 10 Home setup and don't get this warning for a lot of other things I install, e.g., from open source sites used by (old) developers, such as emacs, cygwin or subversion. Point being, I don't think the problem is *me*. I know I can set things to bypass that warning, and similarly Chrome's, but it definitely raises some red flags.

ETA, here's a link to the image: https://imgur.com/eeRRRND. (Upload from URL *also* doesn't work. I get a red bar on the window from this site when I try to do it...)

Thank you for sharing the screenshot, this is most helpful.

What about clicking on this 'More info' link...

You can run our installer with confidence: the installer is not electronically signed, and the files are protected and anti-virus programs (or similar Windows tech) sometimes 'flags' the files and either warn the user, or just quarantine the files.

This is a false-positive and I get it every time I install an update.  Just click on the more info button and select to run anyway.  It should proceed without incident.

OK, I went ahead with the install & payment, but now I'm getting an error from the "Garmin Trainer" install.  See herehttps://imgur.com/a/Gey4YWL

It appears to have been designed for WIndows 7 and is not compatible with Windows 10.

Never mind. I went through all the install steps again and this time it worked.

Just to put this out there.  I and many many other users are having no issues whatsoever with the RXP products or with any current Garmin Trainer (GTN or GNS) under Windows 10.  I believe the core of the issue reported deals with Microsoft Net Framework versions.

I have a current issue where Windows (10) Update is unable to update my Net Framework since April of 2019.  I get update failed results. Have searched high and low for the right resolution without success.

It is not in any way affecting my FSX or RXP products or any other simulator addon that I can detect.  Just a nagging Windows Update issue.  The Microsoft Net Framework repair utility is not resolving the issue.  I am prepared to build a new system with the advent of MSFS 2020....

When this is happening you can always update manually:

  1. Note the KB # in the Windows Update notification
  2. Search the KB # on this site: https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx
  3. Download the correct update (there can be many for each Windows version)
  4. Run the downloaded update (.msu extension)

Believe I have done that multiple times but will follow the lead and try again.  Thank You.

Hi Jean-Luc,
Tried again.  I had previously downloaded that msu file.  Have also run the Net Framework repair utility from Microsoft.  Here is the specific message that appears after the update fails:

2019-02 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.7.2 for Windows 10 Version 1809 for x64 (KB4486553) - Error 0x80070005
