I suspect this pandemic will be studied for years with the hope of coming up with better models to help with the next pandemic. Less hope so!

It's still yet to be seen if that same island isolation that permitted that success will prove a pyrrhic victory, though.  All it takes is one person coming in from a larger world where it's still circulating to start the fire again...how does NZ's economy look with tourism completely off the table?  And it'll be interesting also to see where this drives immigration policy when all it takes is one boatload of illegal invaders to start another biological wildfire...how many times can that knee-jerk slamming of the door be done at the first sign of any subsequent outbreak by the GoNZ before New Zealanders declare "no more"?

Interestingly, the latest polls suggest over 90% approval of the way the government handled the pandemic.
OK we have a rockstar Prime Minister who apparently can do no wrong
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/25/new-zealand-pm-jacinda-ardern-live-tv-earthquake-wellington

And it is well understood that the foreign tourist industry is Over and likely to stay that way until there's a vaccine.
Ski instructors are taking jobs as fruit pickers (because the seasonal workers can't come in).
Airline pilots are driving trains.
In NZ it's what you do and no shame attaches: it's an honest day's work in strange times.

The borders will stay closed, you get in only after 14 days quarantine, no exceptions.
This is understood by everyone, as is the economic storm which follows. Luckily we have a strongly socialist bent which means everyone chips in to help, including the state. We'll get through this, probably somewhat poorer in cash but stronger in spirit.

Just don't take our McDonalds or barista coffee away.

I wish we were united enough to have done the same, but for many, it's every man/woman/child for himself.

My area just had a huge invasion of New Yorkers and New Jersey-ites. The community took one look at all those people wandering around on sunday, many ignoring social distancing and not wearing masks, and after phone calls back and forth all around the area, have pretty much gone into hiding until those guy are gone. I did have to make a quick run to the store (monday) and the area had become a ghost town. (we abandoned our plans as well)

Even the stores were deserted.

I can only assume the out of towners are at various resorts and hotels in the mountains, and the natives will venture out when they are gone.

I touched on this about the UK and the English Channel, but it got deleted as it's difficult to separate this from politics..

A boatload of illegal invaders is every bit as risky as a planeload of business travelers, or a bunch of wealthy New Yorkers fleeing the city for the Berkshires or the Poconos.

Well, the difference is that a planeload of law-abiding business travelers can be managed with things like passport control at both origin and destination.  Illegal immigration is accomplished by active circumvention of law; regardless of whether that law is motivated by state sovereignty or public health concerns.  Immigration enforcement is lax in many places...I wonder if the threat posed by illegal invaders as a disease vector will motivate some genuine interest in effective enforcement.

It seems I've been too subtle.  Please allow me, as a Jewish person, to express my extreme discomfort with immigrant-as-contagion narratives and imagery.  We've been on the receiving end of them too often, and not for the good. Thanks for your attention in this matter.

This conspiracy theorist has decided to come back with one more question.

About reporting.

We got our 40th case last night.  But everyone I talk to wonders what that means.  We had 2 die so there can't be more than 38 cases.  But some of them must have recovered so there are probably fewer than 38 cases.  And since we base our judgements of the danger on that number it is probably inflated.

When are they going to start giving us the numbers of CURRENT cases, not the total cases since this thing started.

For instance in the JH chart it says in Queens 60,000 confirmed cases and 5000 deaths.  So only 55,000 possibly have it now.  But how many have recovered?  It's reasonable to think that at least half have recovered so there are only 27000 ACTIVE cases.  Probably less.

To me, and most of my neighbors and friends, these numbers are meaningless unless we get a tally of recovered cases.  And because of these questions the people around here don't pay much attention to them.  Like my wife; she thinks you're just trying to scare us.  We are intelligent enough to know that the total number of cases since this thing started is NOT the total number of current cases.  So your credibility becomes suspect.

Noel

Without getting too far into a bad place, I once became an illegal immigrant without any act of my own. It's more complicated than you describe - let's respectfully leave it at that.

The article you linked describes legal immigration at a border checkpoint, not illegal immigration.

The danger is presented by a large concentration of people - the same as it is by a pool party at Lake of the Ozarks, or a crowd jamming an airport entrance hall as a result of confusion caused by a botched travel ban announcement.

There is no special danger posed by illegal immigration.

You haven't chosen good ground to fight on.

EDIT: And "Your discomfort is noted" doesn't exactly bridge any gaps.
