Which of course brings us back to China and the wet markets.

I'm sure that by now that you've read that the paper by Chinese researchers that claimed that pangolins were the source of this novel Coronavirus was inaccurate. This is what happens when flawed research is rushed to publication without adequate peer review and then popular accounts of the research are spread throughout the media. The source of the virus that causes COVID-19 is still unknown. It may turn out to be from pangolins but it's just as likely that it originated in either bats or even domestic animals. Bats are notorious for frequenting what you call live markets and their droppings could fall anywhere. But it is also possible that bat droppings could be present pretty much anywhere where bats are found.

Right.  And there was also talk about civets as an intermediate step, which may have happened in SARS but probably not here.  As for the bats, droppings could be the issue but a bite is a much more efficient transmission path.

The wet markets have been implicated in enough outbreaks that they're going to need attention.  But even with that, once something breaks loose - and again, it could happen from some other quarter - there's still the question of how and how fast your respond.  It's basically Sen. Howard Baker's Watergate questions: What did you know?  When did you know it?  And what did you do about it?

Guys, let's please stay away from debating the culpability for and origins of the bug, as it inevitably leads to finger-pointing and angry political arguments.  There are plenty of other places to have those discussions.

Agree with the boss!  If any of you were wondering why you don't see your posts, this is why.  Conspiracy theories are interesting to read, but may cause arguments and bad feelings.
