Classic Airliners P3D V4

Heyo, I wanted to fly some cool old school aircraft for my cargo hauls. I came across 3 that caught my eye:

CaptainSim L-1011

Aerosoft DC-8

Coolsky DC-9

Not the biggest fan of the DC-8 for some reason, but I was going to purchase the DC-9 until I saw that the cargo expansion for it looks like it's only compatible with FSX. Can anybody confirm that it only works for FSX or is it also compatible with P3D V4? The only reason why I would get it is because of the cargo expansion.

The selection of narrow-body freighters in P3Dv4 remains somewhat limited.

The DC-8 looks interesting, but it sure doesn't look like there's very much of a selection of cargo liveries for it on the Aerosoft site (LACSA and Flying Tigers).

The Milviz 737-200 is on sale and has a cargo/combi option, but IIRC, the FMS never made the trip from the FSX version to 64-bit P3Dv4, so I'd check that out first.

CaptainSim also does a 737-200 with a separate cargo expansion, as well as a 757-200 with a separate cargo expansion.  Those are pretty pricey except when they do their "everything for 9.99" sales a few times a year.

Well, I only Have the Aerosoft DC8 and it's quite nice. Sounds like you aren't very interested in it, but it's actually quite fun to fly.

Wouldn't there be community made liveries regarding cargo?

I've had issues with Aerosoft products in the past that's why.

No information about the Coolsky DC-9's cargo expansion though?

I have the Captain Sim L-1011 and the Aerosoft DC-8. The L-1011 is, in principle, well made, but I only flew it a few times. It is just lacking something. Maybe the systems aren't modeled as meticulous, and also the plane has really a lot of switches and buttons. In real life there were three people on the flight deck, and you notice that when you go through an expanded checklist. Also, the many interactive switches require a lot of CPU/GPU resources, so the plane has a relatively low frame rate on my older system.

The DC-8 is one of my favorite P3D models ever. Michael has really found the perfect balance by not modelling those buttons and levers that are not needed during normal flight operations (such as the cross-feed levers, for instance). That does not mean that it is a lightweight model; on the contrary, all normal operations are modeled in great detail. The engines are quite a handful, you really have to pay attention to the gauges in order to get them/keep them working. The CIVA INS is very well implemented and includes drift that needs to be corrected on longer flights. Highly recommended.

If you had issues with other Aerosoft products in the past: this plane was developed by a single person (Michael), so it has been created outside of the usual Aerosoft development procedure. I never had any issues with the DC-8 at all.

+1 for the DC-8. Michael has done a great job on this classic. Fully recommended.

I fly P3D v4.5 & look with a certain amount of envy at what the Historic Jetliners Group put out for FS2004 & FSX.

There are many rare liveries across interesting vintage aircraft.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any inclination to make what they have available in P3D.

I would be happy to have access to a fraction of their portfolio in P3D😊

Unless you only fly jets consider the PMDG DC6 and the Manfred Jan C47. Very detailed and old school planes.

Just Flight has their Vickers VC-10, I'm pretty sure it works in V4.

My friend and fellow painter Brian T (A real cargo pilot for a major cargo carrier), paints many cargo liveries.  Go to page 2 of the this link on Avsim library to see the 3 cargo liveries he painted for the DC-8.

Hi Alex,

I got the Coolsky DC-9 for Fsx and P3Dv4. Unfortunately the cargo version is not available for P3D. It was developed by McPhat Studios which seems to have disappeared since then.

It seems that some people managed to install it, does it work properly, I don't know.

If you have patience , Just Flight is releasing the B747-200 and the A300. Judging from their website, the 747 seems ahead when it comes to release date.

You may wish to consider the Freeware VL Boeing 727-200F. It comes with 11 freight liveries.

The whole VL 727-200 set has over 100 liveries.

Google 'VL 727-200' & you should be able to find it.

If you are not in a rush on those flights, might want to consider the Aeroplane Heaven C119 Flying Boxcar and the FS Addon Bristol Freighter. Both are kind of fun, especially in things such as Air Hauler.

With regard to the DC-8. If you insist on having cargo versions of it, there are many of these variants in the several Just Flight DC-8 products, however, be aware that the Aerosoft DC-8 is of an order of magnitude far greater than the Just Flight DC-8s when it comes to realism. I have both and they are all okay, but the winner is undeniably the Aerosoft one in terms of systems simulation (particularly the nuances of operating old turbojets) and it is a good price too at 30 quid. But if you want some of the long fuselage DC-8 variants in cargo configuration, of the kind which UPS etc flew, and those with re-engined high bypass turbofans and can forgo a bit of systems realism, then it's the Just Flight ones which offer these things.

To clarify what the others said, the DC-8 isn't really the "Aerosoft DC-8", it is more accurately the "Michael Cependa DC-8" as Aerosoft was only the publisher.  I think that DC-8 is a really good aircraft, that even a team of devs would be proud of, much less one person.

@SAS443 I'm hoping they'll release a A300-600 cargo at some point, but the B4 model will do.  I think the A300 is a neat aircraft.
