Opinions for openLC Africa?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have currently all global ORBX products but I'm debating on if I should get openLC Africa as its the last day of the 20% discount.

What is your opinion about it?

I got kind of worried after I watched the trailer, because the trailer was for 95% showing the photoreal areas, which are only a small part of this huge area. This makes me fear that the developer or video producer is not as proud to show the non photoreal areas.

For those of you who have got it, is it on par with openLC South America? (which I found very satisfying)

The other drawback with Africa is, that besides the destinations from FSDG (only 1 is not in the north hemisphere) there is nearly any high quality add-on airport to fly to, which makes the decision even harder to justify. All I have in the South hemisphere's continent is Cape Town and Kilimanjaro

What is your opinion? are orbx textures throughout the continent as good to justify flying over for a few destinations?

Yes, I have seen these, but not so impressed so far. I'm not so sure though if the user's graphic settings or orbx is to blame for not looking good.

I have concentrated on the region Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea so far. Lots of desert. The desert looks definitely better than ORBX Global LC (the edition for the entire world), but it is not photoreal and has some repetitive elements. The Ethiopian highlands look very nice with a mesh installed, and, together with a freeware HAAB, it captures the spirit of the landscape around Addis Ababa quite well (I have been there, so I can compare it to real life).

I would say it is not as nice as South America, but a massive improvement compared to other solutions for Africa. I am happy with it.

The ortho areas are a nice touch. A few areas such as the deserts, Nile Delta, certain mountains, I feel, are very believable for a landclass product.

Personally, I wish I'd not bought OLC South America and think OLC Africa is better, but that really is down to individual taste.

I compiled a list of what I think are acceptable freeware airports:

DAAG - Algiers Int'l, Algeria (by Riad Ghenim)

FAKN - Kruger Mpumalanga Int'l, South Africa (Aeroworx)
FASZ - Skukuza, South Africa (Aeroworx)

FMNN - Nosy Bé-Fascene, Madagascar (Free Scenery Designs)
FMST - Toliara (Tuléar), Madagascar (Free Scenery Designs)

FVHA - Harare Int'l, Zimbabwe (by David Uzzell)

HAAB - Addis Ababa Bole Int'l, Ethiopia (Whitedotsim)

Additionally, it sounds like FSDG are going to have Nairobi and Hurghada ready sooner rather than later.

There is no such thing as a worldwide landclass product called "Orbx Global LC."  I think you're confusing the name of FTX Global, which is a texture replacement package, not landclass.  OpenLC Africa is a landclass replacement for the African region which also includes some enhancements to mesh, a few buffed-up airports etc.

Landclass products lay out a grid which defines which type of texture tiles should be used in any particular grid square, terrain texture replacement products like FTX Global and GEX replace the default terrain texture graphics referenced by those maps with improved versions.

Add to the list of decent freeware that works in P3Dv4:

HRYR (Kigali Rwanda, 2016 version) by Carlysle Sharp, Jacques Botha, and Frits Beyer

HALA (Hawassa Ethiopia) by Carlysle Sharp

FVFA (Victoria Falls Zimbabwe) by Jacques Botha and Frits Beyer

FVWN (Hwange Natl Park Zimbabwe) by David Uzzell

All are FSX sceneries, and may need the taxiway draw flags reset in ADE (I do that as a matter of course, so don't know if it was really needed)

Edit: removed incorrect comment on Dakar GOOY vs GOBD

FSDG made a good lite version of GOOY (Dakar Leopold Senar Senghar), however it's no longer the primary international airport servicing Dakar.  GOBD (Blaise Diagne Intl) opened in Dec 2017 and is now Dakar's principal airport.  GOOY is now a secondary field used for cargo and charter ops.

Other way around, FSDG made GOBD-Lite (Blaise Diagne Int'l).

Apart from Prealsoft's GMMN, Mex High Flight's GMMX, Grand Island Sim's GBYD and maybe Aerosoft's HTKJ, I'm struggling to think of quality African payware that isn't by FSDG.

Thanks for the other freeware suggestions, will take a look at those.

Is there a scenery for Tunesia DTTA?

Search all the known sites, but find no Tunis scenery?!

Don't forget it covers all Africa (and even a little bit more) for less than the price of a full region...

That's a great quality/price value.

And with the reports coming from users, I don't doubt there will be some fixes in a near future...
