Upgrade or clean install?

Recommended Posts

Will you guys be upgrading to v5 or starting all over from scratch?

One thing I can't stand about P3D is the way it's installed. I know some developers are using the new install methods where it install the add-ons outside of the main P3D folder, but there are still 3rd party developers who install stuff inside it and this is where it gets messy. I wish the install of P3D was like X-Plane. Make's things so much easier.

I'll be doing a full, separate install as I keep a backup of each version in its default state.  Plus I plan to use P3Dv4.5 and v5 concurrently.

I will be doing a full, clean install. In fact, I will go ahead and reformat and build back up -- a new version of Prepar3D is a good opportunity to reset everything and get rid of all the bloat acquired over time -- not just from flight simming.  All in all about 2 full days of work! But, there is time, lots of time at home waiting for this viral storm to pass. So I am actually looking forward to it this time.

Same here...for if your P3D v5 gets corrupted or flies south..., you have your v4.5 on the next mouse click.  Then at your leisure, rebuild v5.0, or vice versa...

Separate installtion, but I guess most add-on secnery would work on both in the same folder just like P3Dv3 and v4

But not when sloped runway kicked in add-ons I guess...

There has never been an "upgrade" option from one major P3D version to another.

Also, remember that v5 has tens of thousands of updated default airports, so I would expect some of our v4 add-ons to have potential issues related to exclude polygons that were sized and placed for the airports as they existed in the original 2006 dataset.  I think signage poking through from the base scenery is going to be a recurring thing.  Also, some add-ons placed navaids that did not exist in the 2006 data, so the new base dataset with current data might present issues with duplicated navaids in some sceneries.  A careful and methodical process of adding and testing for these sorts of anomalies will likely save a lot of trouble later.

P3Dv4.5 to P3Dv5 is the same as going from FS9 to FSX totally different product install.

As the others have said, there is no upgrade path. V5 is a new separate purchase and installation, in its own folders. You don't have that choice.

It is not the fault of P3D that developers and users are simply ignoring the platform specification.
