Turning off hyper-threading had quite an impact on my P3Dv5

Recommended Posts

I suspect that even if LM got all this sorted out, many simmers would still tinker with their settings, since tinkering and trying to derive more performance (and fewer stutters) seems to go with the turf in this hobby. But I was a bit surprised that it took only 5 days since the launch for the HT on/off and AM yes/no debates to begin.

But it’s all part of the fun.

That is the hobby. The flight sim is just incidentally the program we use to determine whether our tinkering worked or not! and the day we succeed that will be that because flight Sim just like real flying is super boring. 🤣

Exactly! Part of the rush comes from tweaking your system and then convincing yourself that you’ve gained some advantage or a smidgin more FPS.

I'm over that rush. I just want things to work out of the box. Also want to win the lottery and never work again.

It's still a shame that we still need to wonder about these kinda settings in P3D v5? This all reminds me of FSX all over again. Seriously we have to mess with endless settings in different combinations to get our sim to run they way it should out of the box? If anything it should be up to LM to get this stuff sorted out so that us simmers can actually use our precious time to enjoy the sim instead of tinkering. This is one thing that really frustrates me about FSX/P3D. I really hope MSFS 2020 isn't going to be anything like this.

I do understand about different settings for different PC setups. It is good that we have UI and cfg settings. But to dive into bios and registry to feel our way through complexity to get rid of stutters or poor performance; its out of control.

It sure would be nice for LM to do a study, make a determination, HT, yes or no and why. Put it in a FAQ or in the Learning Center.

This is one of the major reasons I protest against screenshot contests, forums, and hype revolving around screenshots (like MSFS does immensely). I do not mind a nice screenshot here and there to point out the good or bugs, but this community is so bent on screenshots. The emphasis of this very kind of thing allows smoothness/performance/realism to fly under the radar, and bite a giant chunk out of the experience.

Take a look at many of the YT first look vids of P3Dv5. Most are loaded with 3rd party add-ons, starting on a runway, with a simple flight out of an airport in the middle of nowhere. Complete with all the oohs and aahs in the narration. Very few have the traffic sliders up, and maybe a couple utilize the ATC, but none have a complete experience that mimics reality at all. So in essence they are empty and fake first impressions of the product (a flight simulator) as a whole.

Forums all over are displaying the true first experience (NOT impression), which I think is more negative than positive considering this is not a Beta and money has been paid.

MSFS is on the same path, with Alpha testers on a campaign of who's screenshot will be chosen/showcased to be on the next update. All the while some "real-time" realism features are more likely to slip under the radar....I hope not.

The focus needs to be on the realism of the experience. From the UI to preflight planning, to taxiing and takeoff, the reliability of the nav/comm's, to the ramp/gate experience. Screenshots and the striving to get the perfect shot, does its part in hindering what should be the focus.

Once the realism and performance has been achieved, have at it with the screenshots. Realism and performance really go hand in hand if you think about it....how real is it to have stutters, or floating buildings or white squares flashing here and there?

For those that do not care about realism, no problem, you can take off from the ramp and do loops in NYC all you want. You can lower the realism settings, and fly under clear skies and no winds to you're hearts content. But please do not protest against realism, we can all have what we desire if all of what we desire is available.

It's funny when we talk about p3d in terms of performance everyone likes to say that it runs great out of the box without add-ons, and that's supposed to be a fair comparison.  But when we talk about new features or lack thereof people like to say that p3d is a platform designed to run with add-ons and comparing out of the box p3d is unfair.😂😂

We don't have to wonder about these settings in P3Dv5.  This one runs like smooth gangbusters out of the box.

It's good to have the option to alter the sim, though.

I know Xplane11 is not P3D, but Michael Brown (buddies with Austin) showcased that vanilla Xplane11 will give you same FPS with just 3 cores compared to 16 cores. Tested on an i9 9900K.

Most FPS was achieved with 8 cores, HT disabled.

I run an Intel i9-7900X and I use Lasso, you can disable HT and select your preferred cores so I have everything bar games on cores 0 to 2, then games on all other cores 3 to 19... apart from P3Dv5 which is set to run on even cores 4 to 18...

Spoileralert:

EVERY game/sim will benefit to have the right AM when you have a CPU with HT. Thats not an P3D exclusive thing.

@Sethos I have an 9900KS. So 8 cores and HT on makes it 16.
I added an affinity mask to disable the HT part of the cores. It runs way way way smoother. I tested it for 24 hours using the same scenario. And the conclusion is, that the hyper threading causes stuttering, and the affinity mask to turn it off removes the stuttering.

Your conclusion is wrong here, because you turned HT off only for P3Dv5 but, perhaps, continued to benefit from HT On for your OS and any other apps running alongside, as Bert rightfully pointed that out to me.
