V5 working like a charm now..weather injection and all

Recommended Posts

I have tried FSXWX (twice) with both default and True Sky clouds, and see exactly the same problem reported by Stephen of Opus FSI - the injected wind on the surface is unstable in direction.

I set up FSXWX exactly as directed, replacing the default wxmapping.bin and thermaldescriptions.xml, and turning down the turbulence scale factor.

I am sitting at Detroit, with FSXWX active, where the current METAR is showing wind at 180 at 12 knots. The wind velocity is fine, but the direction is swinging all over the place constantly. In flight, the wind variance is even worse - so much so that the default Commander 114 is basically unflyable.

Cloud cover, temperature, pressure and wind velocity are all being injected correctly, but NOT wind direction.

Turning off all of the DWC options at the bottom of the FSXWX window helps a small amount, but the wind direction is still twitchy as hell. This is not correct. If a METAR indicates the winds are variable, then direction can change, but not when the METAR shows a steady wind direction.

Even P3DV5’s default weather themes that include wind are unstable where wind direction is concerned. I was test flying the FSW Lear 35 at FL360 with the default “fair weather” theme enabled. No external weather injection at all. That theme (at high altitude) should give a steady wind of 25 knots from 270 degrees true with no variation in velocity or direction. It has always provided those conditions correctly in previous  versions of P3D. In V5, the velocity is constant at 25 knots, but the direction was once again swinging all over the place, causing constant airspeed fluctuations, and causing the autopilot to have to make constant heading corrections. It’s difficult to accurately evaluate flight model performance when you are constantly fighting shifting winds.

There is something bugged with the P3DV5 default weather engine.

Looks amazing.

thou I’m confused, I have asp4  asca and envtex

sonif I upgrade to 5 and use true sky

I won’t need asca for clouds and envtex for my skies?
true sky  does it all?
thanks

I think we don't know yet what Hifi and TOGA will offer for v5 and how it will interact, if at all, with Truesky. I suspect this is part of why they're taking time to evaluate what makes the most sense before announcing products.

But, yes...here is a dawn departure from KMIA in 4.5 w ASP4, ASCA and Envtex/Envshade...and the same scene with v5, Truesky and FSXWX. I'll let you decide which is which 😉

The sky looks tasty, but the ground looks a little dark on the first pictures given the ambient light...

Agreed, this is just a stopgap. There are some (I think new for v5) options in the prepar3d.cfg file under [WEATHER] about gusts and variance. I am currently testing having all those set to 0 to see if that helps.

The first shot is v4.5. Agreed, it is, and has always, been really wrong at dawn and dusk.

These random cloud shadow blobs really need work.

OK, I didn't know it was from 4.5. Where do pictures for v5 start?

Is the ground during dawn/dusk as dark as on the pictures in the default state of 4.5 without any shader add-ons?  I had a much brighter ground with v3.4 (though the night was too bright).

Is the brightness setting .55?  No wonder it's so dark...

Your confusing my pics with those from @Sesquashtoo

Mine are just the two of the Miami skyline, with the first being 4.5 and the second being v5.  My brightness is at 1.0 in both.

Cruising southwestward out of DTW, just passing Toledo at 6000 feet. Wind direction is holding steady, but the only problem is that it is about 35 degrees off consistently (even accounting for variation). The wind at my current location should be coming from 210 degrees, but it is showing 260 degrees in the sim. Same thing happened at DTW. The METAR wind of 180 degrees true (192 magnetic), was being injected at 232 degrees - but I can live with that.

Decided to give True Sky another try, and it does look quite good. There is a broken layer of stratus about 1000 overhead. FSXWX is indeed doing a pretty nice job. I will see how it works at higher altitudes with the Lear.

It's better than default for now. No question.
