Heh. No.

See and be seen is what we VFR flyers practice. And it is actually quite hard to spot a small aircraft in flight at certain angles and lighting conditions.

I was no 3 in in the pattern a few days ago (uncontrolled field) and this fella in front of me decided to do a 360 orbit(!) prior to turning base due to spacing on short final and I could seriously not see him.

On first first solo back in ‘88 my instructor and I were doing a few touch-n-go’s before he finally had me full stop, got out and sent me on my solo.

We were flying at KAPV in Apple Valley, Ca which was uncontrolled but had a Unicom freq for people to report their postitions. We were turning from base to final and announced when all of the sudden a Pipe Cub went right over the top of us unannounced. My IP got on the radio screaming at the guy but I’m guessing he wasn’t flying with a radio, it was off, he wasn’t paying attention, or didn’t have the frequency as he never made a call.

Its tough to say be he cleared us by only 30 feet or so. We were in a 152 so we couldn’t see above but since he was in a Cub he could have seen below and surprisingly didn’t see us or hear us.

After we landed that attempt is when my IP got out and sent me on my way. In hindsight, I’m surprised he didn’t want to go around again to make sure I was calm enough but it worked out.

The saying that "a pilot begins flying with two bags, one full of luck and the other one empty. The idea is to fill the empty one with experience before they empty the bag full of luck." I say that after looking at that clip, a pilot needs THREE bags...😓

Very true. Even with tcas and controllers telling you where to look, it’s still hard to see traffic a lot of the time. Sometimes you spot them fine, others they all might as well be invisible.

I had one similar flying into General Mitchell field in Milwaukee back in the 70's.  I was in a 722 (passenger) and we were on short final. All of a sudden the Capt. firewalled the throttles and started cleaning the aircraft up. I looked down and a light twin couldn't have been more than 50 ft below us. We flew out over the lake and made another approach. This on without incident. You have to wonder what people are thinking and not paying attention.
