ok, so it's like this:

I have no activations left on the v4 code, so I'm downloading the 5 one (I think there is a v4.5 in that download).  I've tried that and got errors there.  However, I think you might be right.  Thanks

No, there is not a 4.5 download with your 5.x licence code. You have to contact support for getting activation counter resetted.

Is this the licence ID you got when you bought V4?

Go into the window where P3D asks you for them, the first time you start the sim after installation.

You can download whatever. But you can only activate each version with the license ID and password that belongs to it. You cannot activate 4.5 with the license that you bought for V5 nor vice versa. You have to request a reset of your V4 license, there is no other way. Or switch to V5 now and forget about V4 until your activations have been reset. Just send an email with the license ID to the address that you see on the error window.

You only have two activations for V5 left, so be careful, or you will have none at all.

Btw. you always have to uninstall P3D properly to regain your license activation when you want to reinstall it. If you just delete it, especially from a computer that is offline, Lockheed doesn't get the message and thinks that your sim is still active.

In which case, I will email them with what you said there!

Do I use the v4 license and code when I get a reply from them?  (This explains why they said I'm not allowed to login to 4 anymore.)

As Oliver said, your Email/Login ID and Password are for the Prepar3d.com website for accessing your downloads and the license portal.

If you have that, you can access everything else you need.

If you log into the licensing portal (https://secure.prepar3d.com/solo/customers/Default.aspx) you can then click on "Licenses & Activations" to see a list of each product you own; if you then click on a product it will show you your License ID, Activation Password and the number of activations you have remaining.  Your customer ID is not needed to activate the software, it is used to create a new account if you don't have one, but you already do have one.

You can't use your v5 license for a v4 installer and you can't use a v4 license for a v5 installer.  They are totally separate.

When you install a version of the software, when you start it the first time you are asked for your License ID and your Activation password. These are the only two things that will work to activate the software and as soon as you do, your activations remaining will go down by one on the license portal.

If you do not UNINSTALL the software, the activation doesn't get returned and that's how you end up with 0 activations, in which case the ONLY thing you can do is contact LM and ask them to reset your activations.  This is why it is critical that you uninstall before making any changes, formatting your drive, getting a new computer, etc, etc, etc.  LM gives you two activations per license, so the counter starts at 2 when you buy the software. Once you install and use your License ID and Activation Password to activate the program, you will have 1 activation remaining. If you then uninstall the program, the counter will go back to 2.  If you install a second time without uninstalling, your count will go to 0. So on and so forth.

I'm at a point where I think we're talking about different software.

Can I ask if I download v4.5 with my v5 license, then use the p5 license number?

No. V4.5 is part of v4. It is tied to the v4 license. The only solution to your problem is to:

1) Contact LM and ask them to reset your v4 license activations. Explain that you didn't realize you needed to uninstall prior to reinstalling your OS. They will do it for you. It will take a few days.

2) Install the latest build of v4 (which is v4.5HF3) and use the v4 License ID and Activation Password as they appear in the license portal.

If your login gives you the option to download 4.5 or 5 - no big deal BUT when you try to run P3D - you will need the correct ID & Password for EACH version.
