i7 9700k temps using 4k

Recommended Posts

Hello, hopefully I can get advise here as I am pretty shocked by my current CPU temps.

I'm using P3D v4.5 with a 1080ti and an i7 9700k at STOCK speeds.

Before moving to a 4K screen temps were 70C-85C (I have an Arctic freezer fan cooler, did not bother to buy a fancy cooler since I am not overclocking the CPU)

However in a test flight using my new 4K screen all cores went up to the max of 100C!

I am using coretemp to capture the temperatures.

1. Does the above make sense even if I'm not OCing?

2. What is the recommended cooler from your experience and what change in temp should I expect? 100C as a starting point is already too high...

Thank you!

Shom

I Have a 9700K OC to 5.0mhz with gtx 1080 on ultrawide screen. CPu runs at 1.36v max @ 72 deg C flat out running X-Plane or P3D v4.

I use a large airy case with 240mm AIO and 1 140mm fan for air in and 2 140mmm fans out.

My thoughts would be to check the cpu thermal paste and reseat the heatsink then look at your cooling / airflow

Thanks Gordon, do you have a specific CPU cooler or are you using a stock fan? Sorry if I did not understand from the above...

It's liquid cooled with a 240mm radiator ALL IN ONE cooling solution. Google 240mm AIO and you will see what it is.

AIO All in One - Water cooling block for the cpu water radiator and two fans attached to the rad. Many brands on the market I just chose Corsair 105 (price point) Very easy to fit as everything already connected. Just make sure pipe runs are long enough for where you want to install a radiator in the case.

Wisdom of hindsight I think I should have bought a slightly beefier version (deeper rad thickness). I originally planned to install the Rad venting/extracting upwards out of the case but pipe run made front intakel air the practical option. Does mean that the NVME M.2 pcie ssd installed on the motherboard under the GTX 1080 runs hotter than I would like at 65 C.

With X-Plane Vulkan the 1080 is at 100 percent most of the time and whilst the AIO and case fans are quiet the GPU fans are running at 50 percent and beginning to be noticeable.

100C is definitely too high for a stock CPU. The best all-in-one coolers, for both price and performance, are currently the Arctic Liquid Freezer II series. The Arctic Liquid Freezer II 280 is cheaper than most other 240 models and has excellent performance even when compared to much more expensive coolers. Whichever cooler you decide to get, make very sure that it will definitely fit in your case. Many older cases (and even some recent ones) aren’t designed to accomodate liquid cooling systems - or even some of the best air coolers, come to that.

I also run a 9700k and have the 1080ti.  I oc to 4.9.  Under load temps peak around 72-74.  So like others have said.  Either try re-mounting your cooler or get a new cooler.

The move to 4K definitely made temps go up by 20C, they were usually around 80C with an Arctic freezer fan

Thank you!

Yeah, something obviously wrong there. 100 degrees is almost T J Max, the point where the CPU will be throttling back. Any hotter and it will shut down.

This shouldn't be happening at stock speeds.

Make sure you ARE at stock settings. Some motherboards automatically switch on Multicore Enhancement, which will clock all cores to the max single core Turbo frequency, so make sure you set BIOS to optimised defaults and MCE is off.

Once that's done, make sure the fan on the cooler is running at the proper RPM and not locked on low speed. Look at the fan curve and make sure its increasing fan RPM in accordance with temp.

If all above looks okay, remove cooler, apply new thermal paste, and test again.
