Which GPS RXP or F1?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am very close to buying the Reality XP GPS, GTN 750/650 or GNS 530/430. I have some questions, if you don't mind?

Any reason to buy the F1 version over these?

What's the difference between the GTN 750/650 compared to GNS 530/430 ? I assume that the GTN 750/650 is a newer better version of the GNS 530/430? Is that correct?  Do I need to buy both? Any advantage to having both?

What's the difference between the GTN 750 or 650? Is the 650 just the smaller version but otherwise the same?

Is there anything else you think I should know? I'm fairly comfortable editing ini/cfg files or whatever.

Many thanks for your input!  🙂

Bully.

PS I'm running p3d v5.

The gtn 750 is touch screen based so much easier to use.

For p3d, i suggest the F1 version. The reality xp version isnt quite as widely supported.

I have both, and i use the F1 in P3D.

In x-plane, I use the reality xp version.

At Flight 1, you’ll ve buying the GTN complete, which gives you the 650 (small) and 750 (large) versions.

I love the GTN750 in this sim - it’s brilliant.

You can download trainers for this and other Garmin gps units from their site for free if you just want to see what it does.

I thought the F1 products were no longer supported. @Bert Pieke?

I have the RXP and it's fantastic.

I have had the Flight 1 GTN 750/650 since they were first released for FSX. I have now moved to the RXP GTN 750/650 platform. I find the RXP much more stable especially for helicopter operations.

One more vote for the RXP unit.

Functionally, the F1 and RXP units are pretty much equivalent, but the RXP unit is well supported

by the author, whereas F1 support has been less than stellar over the last while.

Last I looked, the RXP unit was on sale at $35 which is a steal.

I've also been very happy with the RXP 750 in my GA aircraft.  Quick and active support right here on avsim.

Switched from the F1 GTN Complete to RXP a few months ago and absolutely love it.

My main problem with the F1 GTN was I could never get it to work satisfactorily in touch mode on a tablet.

The RXP, on the other hand, works flawlessly on a 7" tablet using the SpaceDesk multi-monitor app.

I have nothing against RXP, haven't tried it. I started with F1 GTN and have had no issues at all. If Bert's correct, at $35 I might give RXP a go just to see.

Garmin's GNS series GPS units are legendary, but not sold any more in the real world.

Just like flip phones have been replaced by smartphones, GNS units have been replaced by the GTN series.

However, some flightsim airplanes were designed with the GNS series installed in the panel, and if you want to fly those, you may indeed need a GNS..  Example: RealAir B60 Duke, or Aerosoft Twotter.

Most of the newer releases support a GTN unit, however, and your best choice right now would indeed be the GTN 750.

One thing to remember is that with the next Windows10 update, people are making reports that the Flight1 version is not running well. You can search for topics about that here in Avsim. I have the F1 version wich i like a lot BUT im afraid this will be a problem in the near future. Let´s see if the devs can show us the path to continue use the f1 version. Otherwise we will only have the rxp version available when the windows 10 update comes.

This thread could go on for another 400 pages and there still wouldn't be a conclusive answer.

I've used the Flight1 version and never had an issue. I've also owned RealityXP avionics, and guess what? Never had an issue either.

It's like six of one, half dozen of the others.

Thanks Bert, the support thing is an issue for me with F1 on some of their other products. So I'd rather not give them my money unless there is no alternative.

Seems like the RXP is a no brainer with the sale price, that's what caught my attention this morning.

I have both of those, thank you for the heads up looks like I need the GTN + GNS 🙂

Thank you everyone else for your input too!

Just one last thing, Can I get away with just buying the GTN 750 + GNS 530? Whats the reason to buy the smaller ones GTN 650 + GNS 430 is there any occasion I would need them over the 750/530 ?

Sorry for all the questions, but want to make sure I buy what suits my needs  🙂

Many thanks all 🙂

I own both and only use RXP now.  Better performance, more configuration flexibility, and of course better support... from RXP and the community.

Again, it depends on what airplanes you own and like to fly.

The GNS 430 / GTN 650 are half-height units and fit into smaller spaces in the radio panel.

Other than that,  I prefer the larger GNS 530 / GTN 750 units for looks and usability.
