Along the Great Divide (Part 1)

Along the Great Divide (Part 1)

The Continental Divide of the Americas (also known as the Great Divide is the principal, and largely mountainoushydrological divide of the Americas. The Continental Divide separates the watersheds that drain into the Pacific Ocean from those river systems that drain into the Atlantic Ocean.

Although there are many other hydrological divides in the Americas, the Continental Divide is by far the most prominent of these because it tends to follow a line of high peaks along the main ranges of the Rocky Mountains at a generally much higher elevation than the other hydrological divisions.

Part One starts near the Canadian border and will proceed south and east.  Future parts will continue down to the Mexican border.

We will start at Felts Field (KSFF) in Spokane Washington, then fly towards the Canadian border landing at Boundary County Field (65S) near Bonners Ferry, then proceed east into Montana to Eureka (88M).  The route turns south to Glacier Park International (KGPI) and then Missoula (KMSO) before turning east again for a stop at Helena Regional (KHLN).  The next stop is Bozeman (KBZN).  A short hop over to Mission (KLVM) then down to West Yellowstone (KWYS).  The final leg will take us into Yellowstone National Park over the Geyser Basin before descending down into Jackson Hole and our destination (KJAC).

The route is 583 miles.  We can abbreviate the flight at any airport if we are pressed for time and resume part 2 of this routing wherever we decide to stop.

Documentation
The flightplan can be found here.

Aircraft
In order to cover the distance we shall plan to cruise at around 250knts.  The PC-12, King Air, or Citation Mustang are good GA choices, Any warbird will also work as will the Lancair (Legacy or IV-P).  As always you are free to fly what you like.

Scenery
The flight looks best with the payware Orbx NRM and CRM regional scenery packages.  Today’s flight also features six Orbx Payware airports: KSFF, 65S, KGPI, KBZN, KWYS, and KJAC.
