Custom expression help - Overall lighting

I want to add an expression that tweaks the ambient VC sunlight ratio based on the overall scene lighting.  So basically I want the shadowed area of the cockpit to look darker when the aircraft is under a dark overcast vs when the skies are mostly sunny and the overall lighting is bright.  Can anyone help with the right expressions to use for this?
