Ortho

Recommended Posts

Hi, so, I’m pretty spoiled with XP11 when it comes to ortho. What I’m looking for is

1.) A list of ortho sceneries for P3D (V5 if possible). I know about the Orbx true earth ones.

2.) is it possible (and easy) to make your own like in Ortho4XP?

3.) do I need the resolution scenery slider at 7CM for ortho and the mesh slider lower than 5M?

many thanks!

Well, you’re “spoiled” with ortho in X-plane if you like flying over drab, depressing-colored terrain with 1990s-style clouds and water to match it.

To answer you questions:

1. Add megascenery earth to the list. An option for those not motivated to make their own. There are others, but along with TrueEarth that’s the main commercial option.

2. Use Ortho4p3d, just like ortho4xp, to make your own. fS Earth tiles is also very good, but does not do water masking. You’re not getting an “overlay”, though, (in x-plane terms), so if that is a deal breaker you shoild probably stop now or stick to TrueEarth.

3. Mesh in p3d is independent of the ortho, unlike x-plane. So your mesh setting depends on the mesh you have installed, which is a separate issue. Textures only need to be set to 7cm if you’re running 7cm resolution ortho, which you won’t be most likely (ZL16 is the same as x-plane, around 2m per pixel).

Ouch, I wouldn't call this drab or depressing. 😀

I Run ZL 18-19 in XP11. Is that the equivalent of 7CM?
Also, it is 100% not drab. I use UWXP 2.6 so that helps, and I also use digital vibrance which also helps. Anyway I digress, I was hoping to get P3DV5 up to the same kinda level. I hate land class based stuff.

1. Zl 18 is 50cm per pixel.

2. Let’s stop with the inferences that x-plane is better and that p3d somehow needs to get up to the “same level”. This is a p3d forum. I’ve got many hundreds of hours in both sims, almost exclusively flying over ortho. I think that p3d v5 with EA and ortho looks far better than anything that can be obtained with x-plane Vulkan, but I’m not going to go over to the org forums and start posting that. If you’ve got questions, ask away, but most of your posts (here and in the MSFS forum) are negative about P3D and/or compare it unfavorably to X-plane.

Totally agree. The same people always start raving about XP. So why are they here ? ....  Simply because P3D has something they are missing in XP ...

In all my Fs years I have never posted 1 time in the XP forum..

And imho P3D4 and now V5 look good :

I made 8 attempts, with each update, to go to X-Plane, but the toy graphics scared me off and returned to P3D. Four sliders in the settings is a failure.)

By the looks of it FS2020 is going to be the only one that will provide worldwide photo real scenery with autogen, so we may have to wait for that to become available.

Well, this is not a thread about FS2020. It's a thread about how to make ortho in P3D v5, which you can do on a worldwide scale if you like - and in fact it's exactly what I am in the midst of doing right now. If you want worldwide scale with autogen, then X-plane is likely better. I build for both, I prefer P3D v5 over X-plane for most use cases.

FS2020 is a product that people can speculate about elsewhere - there is a very active forum for that - it's not a current option for ortho for the non-alpha testers.

Yes, you can deploy ortho in P3D the same as you can in XP. Yes you can make it yourself WITH Ortho4XP. You do not need the scenery slider at 7CM for ortho because it is nowhere near that high resolution, even at ZL 18. That said, I just always have it on 7CM because it doesn't appear to cost me anything and it is one of those set it and forget it settings.

I built Sweden, Croatia, Serbia, Cyprus and Greece. They aren't touched up by hand, but they're pretty good based just on OSM data.

I highly recommend using 7zip (https://www.7-zip.org/) to decompress these. Sweden is only in 7z format and not regular zip format. Sweden is broken into four regions, but you can combine them together. Just skip duplicates when you merge, or you can merge them properly with scenproc, I just haven't done that yet.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1lYW4wgxAQrn4FyPzV4pHkS4eGBGidVFo?usp=sharing

I will add more when I make them, but for now it has:

Sweden

Serbia

Croatia

Cyprus

Greece
