Hi all,

Currently looking at getting the following system from PC Specialist:

i5-10600K OC (4.1GHz up to 5.1GHz)

RTX 2070 Super

16GB RAM Corsair Vegeance DDR4 3200MHz

Any thoughts? To reduce the cost I wouldn't mind taking the RTX 2060 Super but would this bottleneck the CPU? How much of a performance drop could I expect between the 2070s and the 2060s? And what gain in comparison to the 2080s? Also, is the i7-10700K worth the cost from the i5-10600K? They have similar speeds when overclocked and although the i5 only has 6 cores and the i7 has 8, I'm not sure this would translate into a huge performance gain in P3D?

My aim is to be able to fly the FSLabs A320 series at 30FPS throughout Europe, on medium settings with Active Sky and likely ORBX Global.

Cheers,

Oliver Mitchell.

is it an option to build the computer yourself?  Even if not have you considered getting one (or making one) without a graphics card.  Then in september there should be much better choices with the new Nvidia line right around the corner?  i would highly recommend getting the most VRAM you can if you plan on using V5 in conjunction with good settings.

@micstatic No, I'm not well versed in building etc - this is my first dedicated P3D computer. I don't think I would have the budget for the 2080Ti which has slightly more VRAM than the 2080s/70s/60s, which obviously limits me. However, I am happy to run with lower settings if need be as, whilst running sliders to the right is nice to look at, I do value the actual flying a lot more than the visuals 🙂

Oliver Mitchell.

Welcome to Avsim!

It that's the case, then perhaps you should consider the 10700K/2060 Super combo.  The 10700K certainly has more grunt and processing power than the 10600K.  Include top notch cooling and the 10700K overclocked will be a very capable simulation cruncher at the expense of less eye candy (2060 Super instead of 2070 Super)!

Good luck,

Greg

The i9-9900K should be enough for your needs. Is this an option?

Thanks @lownslo! I think I'd be happy to take the 2070s with the 10700K anyway as I've got the budget for that.

@Jude Bradley Likely above my budget 😞

Perhaps an OC i7 10700K plus a 2070s/2080s would be appropriate? Would the performance gain on that from the 70 to 80 be big enough to justify the extra cost (£200)? If i elected to go with the 2070s, would that bottleneck the CPU?

Oliver Mitchell.

I would second the 2060Super vs the 2070 if you are trying to take some cost out of the system. Both have 8Gb VRAM I believe so this would be viable alternative given your modest objectives of requried sim performance.

Re 6 cores vs 8 cores, I am not sure you are going to see significant differences when flying in P3D based on those 2 physical cores and 2 addition LPs if you have HT turned on. Again CPU core speed on all cores will count for more I believe and you will see greater benefit from this aspect.

On buying from a vendor, there's some good sim PC choices around. I would also echo that buying a system without the dedicated graphics card but has integrated Intel graphics on the motherboard is also a good approach. This way you can set the base PC system up.

Then you can look around for a good deal on a separate graphics card. I took this approach on my current rig last Feb to save some money. In fact, I got my rig configured with a small SSD and had the OS pre-installed. I then found better deals on line for larger/additional M2 SSDs and HDDs, installed a 2nd network card for my home network  and installed them myself. It was a half-way house of having the system 3/4  built/configured for me and then I added some specific components on to the build myself.

Good luck with the search and PC setup.

Hi @aldridgem! For a while I was veering toward the 10700K but now that you have said this I'm quite relieved to be honest! Perhaps I should reconsider the 10600K then! Are you able to suggest whether the 10600K would bottleneck an RTX 2080s?

Oliver Mitchell.

I dont know exactly what the performance implications are, but my 10900k maxes out all cores and threads with p3d, but only when in the air.  On the ground my fps are still limited by the main rendering thread.  I would like to do a test of these two cpus head to head and compare.

Hi Oliver,

I can only comment based on specs on paper unless you can find this comparison performed on P3D in these forums.

My thoughts are the following. Essentially either CPU would suffice IMHO as it relates to bottlenecks on the RTX  2080. I think you are OK there.Take your pick of CPU

My observations on the CPUs:

The 10700K has a higher Turbo Max speed (usually on one core not all of them) but its base clock is lower than the 10600K. (3.8 Ghz vs 4.1GHz on the 10600K)

My personal preference would be the 10600K because of higher base clock that puts you in the 4+ Ghz region.

Having said that, I would research the overclocking potential of one CPU versus the other by Googling some internet posts. Both are K models.

When I set out to build my P3D rig, my target was to have all cores running at around 4.5Ghz for P3D v4.

I would explore which CPU of those two you specified has more o/c capability. Some CPUs have more flexibility of handling a moderate overclock than others.

Just a side note having read some posts on the P3D forum: It appears (anecdotally) that those users that have really pushed their overclocks are seeing more instability in the initial release of v5  versus those that have moderate or no overclocks. Whether LM is able to investigate and resolve that remains to be seen. Again my target was a reasonable overclock but I would not go the "whole hog". Others here would probably disagree.

There are experts and tech geeks in this community that have done an amazing job of pushing their systems to the limit and have it be stable at much higher Ghz , but unfortunately I am not one of them!

I hope this points you in the right direction.

Regards

RAM is not expensive, you can use more than 16G in V5

.....get 32G RAM

In my experience you will want 8 physical cores over 6.  6 is "ok" but there will be times that the terrain rendering cores get saturated at a lower airspeed with 6 cores, than with 8.

Given the new-gen nvidia cards are not far away, I'm not sure I'd shell out for a 2080ti at this time.  I think you're doing right looking at other options there.

Thanks for the help everyone!

@Mace Lucky you should say that! This afternoon I ordered the PC. I went for the i7-10700K with a RTX 2080S.

As I say, thank you to everyone for my help. I'm super excited!

Cheers,

Oliver Mitchell.
