Oculus Rift S questions

Will look into the HP Reverb G2 then, how well does it compare to the Rift S?

HP Reverb is Windows Mixed Reality. I don’t own the Reverb, but I do own a WMR headset (with hundreds of P3D VR hours on it) and a Rift S.

I would advise against WMR for your first headset, both in general and for P3D. It’s a less-compatible platform (note LM didn’t initially cover this with their post-release VR fixes for P3D, cue angry Reverb owners!). The software and interface are relatively clumsy and performance will be worse with the added pixels. Rift S just works - virtual desktop, smooth frames, very good clarity in P3d with supersampling at 150%, great tracking, comfortable headset, audio that plays well with P3D.

So, my advise? Start with the mass-market, tried-and-tested Rift S and (maybe) consider playing with a specialist WMR device once you’re used to VR and feel like being a bit adventurous.

I've just add the chance to try a Reverb G1 for a couple weeks, and I can assure you there is no issue whatsoever with tracking, setup, sound etc... Works a charm with SteamVR, Alyx, Elite Dangerous, and others.

Works great with X-Plane and P3D. No need for SS 150% which will trade your GPU resources for a slightly better detailed view, because the native 2160x2160 per eye of the Reverb doesn't need SS at all for making cockpits legible in my experience (I'm also nearsighted and don't use any glasses in the Reverb fine).

There is also no SDE visible at all (maybe because I'm nearsighted LOL) unless you really try to look specifically at it (a huge difference when comparing with a Vive I've also tried out).

Sweet spot is ok once you find a good and consistent way to put the HMD on your head. I've settled to rest the bottom of the face mask slightly bellow the cheek bones. It feels awkward at first but you get used to it and this gives a consistent reference where to wear the HMD for a given sweet spot.

Just sharing my experience with it which is overall positive.

You might want to review some online reviews and comments prior purchasing, especially non-flight sim related discussions and information to get a broader spectrum of advises.

One blogger has had the G2 for previewing and has commented on it:

https://www.roadtovr.com/hp-reverb-g2-hands-on-preview/
https://www.roadtovr.com/hp-reverb-g2-hands-on-preview-part-2/

You might want to view this as well (but will not get a definitive recommendation in this video, just comparative info):

A number of "through the lenses" video to compare as well (the link is supposed to take you to the playlist where there are plenty others):

And if you can afford it:

Thank you all---that helped a lot.

I never fly without my TIR 5,and i think the Rift S is the next step.

For those having trouble with their Rift S---i hope, you will get it sorted.

I will buy the Rift S,i can return it within 14days if it will not work as expected.

re: "Having one might make you thing differently than:"

As I stated, I've got hundreds of hours of P3D time using WMR, which is what I was commenting on. How many hours have you used used a Rift S for in P3D in order to form your contrary opinion?

I'll likely get a HP Reverb at some stage, as I like to try out all of the HMDs, However, using a Rift S in Oculus or Steam VR mode has a lot of advantages over Microsoft's much more clunky VR implementation. For a beginner, which is the question I'm responding to, the Rift S is simple, cheap, reliable starter that is arguably as good as anything on the market for an advanced VR user as well.

The HP Reverb has one big selling point - resolution. However, general VR performance is currently marginal in P3D, so more pixels in the absence of foveated rendering is not really all that attractive.

Perfect WMR compatibility is also not guaranteed with P3D. The VR fix in v5 famously ignored WMR altogether in its initial release. Lockheed martin have stated in the past that they only support Rift and Vive, and as far as I can see their current official policy also does not mention WMR (from the current v5 page: For virtual reality, please refer to the hardware manufacture for detailed system requirements at Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Varjo VR-1 and Varjo XR-1.)

So, as I stated above, I see the Reverb as an interesting option for the more advanced user, but continue to recommend the significantly cheaper Rift S as the best first option for those on the fence as to whether to try VR or not.

Mike, my only advice is don't give up too soon. It takes a few dozen hours for your brain to really get used to VR. I definitely thought it was a gimmick for the first hour or two, now I would never fly without it.

Stick with it, and VR will be your normal mode of P3D flight before you know it!

I've probably badly expressed myself:

I'm not forming a contrary opinion, rather, I'm trying to give additional information about some of the differences the Reverb might have compared to other headsets, and I'm just highlighting how not having tested a Reverb might be a factor in not recommending it if such recommendation is solely based on experience with plenty others but the Reverb. That's all.

The links I've posted above might also help anyone looking for comparisons in a different context than simming.

Besides what I'm saying doesn't preclude anything other about the qualities of the Rift S other than what I've said above:

Quote

The advantage of HP and Valve (don't know for Samsung): they are not in the business of reselling your usage and personal information to advertisers.

I’m actually in the same boat, maybe a bit of an outlier.  In my case though, I will add that I have the Rift and not the Rift S meaning I have to deal with the remote sensors that my cats have a habit of knocking over leading me to recalibrate a lot.  That wasn’t the only reason I never got too far into VR, the the calibration is definitely annoying.

That's funny with your cats! 😼

I might try it again when Microsoft Flight Simulator is released and supports it, but I really don't see the advantage over TrackIR, for myself. TrackIR leaves you with sharp graphics and so much more comfort.

When my wife sees me using my RiftS, she will sneak up on me and try to make me wet myself 😠

Track IR lets you pan around a flat screen. VR lets you sit in the cockpit. Basically, it's a simple as that. I have a Track IR, but it's chalk and cheese compared to the Rift S (and Track IR is the chalk!)

To me it looks like with TrackIR, the screen stays still and the scenery moves and with VR the scenery stays still and your head moves.  The end effect is similar, but VR does not have the high quality resolution of using TrackIR.

It's just preference.

VR renders in 3D.  More than makes up for lack of resolution.

Hi guys,

i have seen today, that the Rift S is now available again here in Germany for 450,-€.

Can you recommend it for P3D v4 and v5?

I wear glasses,is there enough distance to the lenses,so that they will not be scratched?

Is it easy to set up the Rift S in both Sims?

It`s a lot of money for me,but the immersion must be outstanding from my reading in the German FSMagazine.

Thanks for your answers.

Mike

I always recommend rift S if someone is looking for a 1st headset.

i can strongly recommend it for v4 and v5. I did all of my v4 flights with vr, but used a variety of hmds, v5 has been exclusively rift s.

i dont wear glasses so no comment there.

set up us easy, but there are a few tricks.

For v5:

- need a good gpu

- run in steam mode, not oculus

overssmple in steam, 150% if your gpu can cope

- i recommend using EA cos it’s pretty, but that means you need stereo mode not single pass

There are also lots of usability choices eg aircraft selection, scenery, sliders - that will need to be considered.

Yes, the immersion is worth the money. Best thing invented for flight sim, ever.

final point - vr takes time adjust to. You need to commit to it.

Good luck!

edit: just looked thru thread after answering op’s question and realised that this is a ressurected thread from last week - where i’d already commented. Quite a bit! So sorry if i;ve just repeated myself anywhere 😊

Having flown both extensively, i’d say they are very different. Vr gives the impression that you are actually inside the plane. Trackir just allows you to pan a 2d view with head movements,

Trackir was good in its day, but vr is completely different tech. Resolution is also decent with modern hmds.

HP Reverb 2140x2140 resolution is the sweet spot performance-wise for i9-9900+gtx2080ti combination. Any higher resolution than that may be just too much for the current hardware. If you have such hardware all the way for HP Reverb G1 or G2 when released. It's insane in this res. and can be made very fluid with decent visuals in every vr-compatible flight simulation I've know so far.

Cheers.

PS: like one of my VR-savvy friends told me: "After Reverb in Rift-s you feel like your retina begins to stratify" Lol. Rift-S is still very good he added though. I bought HP Reverb after that ))
