May be quicker to try another aircraft in a new location first to eliminate those.

You may need to uninstall the sim before renaming the folders, but uninstalling leaves any changes intact which will be picked up if you go back.

OK so I uninstalled P3D v5 (all components).

then I renamed all of the files listed above.

Reinstalled P3D v5 HF2 so should be a fresh install.  I could find no evidence of any addons.

I changed the settings to my normal preferences, nothing crazy, very middle of the road.  Flew the default F-35 from KBOS to KSFO.

After an hour it was a blurry mess, really bad!  By the time I got to SFO it was single digit stuttering blurry mess.  CPU at 100% for long periods of time during low FPS, then some break from it.

Clearly something is very wrong either with P3D v5 or with my system or both.   P3D v4 is fine btw.  I think I am going to uninstall all addons, clear out everything and start over.  I don't see any other options at this point.

OK. If you have an NVidia card can you run the Nvidia Control Panel 3D settings and Restore/Apply the global tab and with the Prepar3D.exe profile make a change, apply it, and then Restore/Apply that. Can you also put an Affinity Mask into the Prepar3D.cfg 1365.

Interested to understand why the focus on the GPU when it appears to have lots of headroom. Also, what changes do you recommend on the P3D tab?

That's not focusing on the GPU - rather it is ensuring the setup is correct going forward. You must leave all the settings alone until you have eliminated items to home in on the problem.

...with the CPU your screenshot shows it is HT enabled, so the Affinity Mask is there to eliminate no foulups in HT.

The procedure to set the factory defaults on the GPU driver can be necessary when driver versions have altered in capability. So if there's no Restore button available the setting of an arbitrary value will provide the button to Restore. Then Apply to insert the true factory defaults. Not always necessary just a precaution.

Well, some progress, cautiously optimistic.  I remembered when I installed the latest Nvidia driver a week ago that it was not a clean install.  I reinstalled the driver again as a clean install (driver only, no Physx, or sound or Nvidia Experience).  Deleted my shaders and flew the same flight KBOS to KSFO in the F-35 and did not experience the drop in framerates every few seconds.  Landing in SFO with 25+ FPS very flyable and no issues, no blurries, no stutters and no slideshow.  Thanks for the help Steve, I probably got there a slightly different way but looks promising.

OK good job! I always start with fresh driver settings with the procedure I showed.

I always use GeForce Experience, driver update, express install, reboot, restore/apply the global, and in the P3D profile make a change to something, apply it then restore/apply. Saves all the running around.

Hi Steve,

I too prefer using GeForce Experience. Uncomplicated, secure and very straightforward. Curious about the reasons behind your choice of the ‘express’ rather than the ‘clean’ install option. I’ve always opted for the latter (Win7 and Win10) and, so far, never had any issues. Also, never needed to use DDU although I have tried it in the distant past to familiarise myself with the process.

There does seem to be far too much emphasis on the use of DDU on the forums. Surely we can trust Nvidia’s GeForce Experience vehicle to download and run the driver installer reliably via the offered ‘express’ and ‘clean’ options. It should be noted that you lose all the previous profiles (global and app-specific) by opting for the ‘clean’ install and, in theory at least, there should be no requirement to restore the factory defaults, although no harm will come from doing it anyway.

Seems to me that a user’s reluctance to trust such tools to execute the job with reliability is misplaced and unnecessary.

Regards,

Mike

Edit: Could it be that you reserve the ‘clean’ install option for major driver updates and/or changes within the Nvidia driven GPU line?

The use of DDU might be the sensible way to go to ensure a clean restart before switching from Nvidia to AMD or vice versa.
