When testing, do you look at your sim data usage?

Of course. 🙂

I remember in certain MMOs, the first thing they would ask, usually in a rude way, when you tried to join a group, was what is your ping?

When I was playing those I was on dial-up with pings of 165.  At least my ping didn't lag everyone else in the games I was playing, but it did make for a challenge for me to play.

My satellite had pings of around 650.  Due to all the handshaking in https this multiplied how long it took to load a page by a factor of 10.  The previous satellite Internet had an additional layer of protocol and had pings of 1300 ms.  Oddly enough this wasn't a problem (or even noticeable) in the Napoleonic battlefield simulator I played online at the time.  HistWar: Les Grognards.

Yes, it was a big factor back when gaming in the mid to late 90s, having hundreds of milliseconds difference between players could render the game almost unplayable. It still happens today to some degree, most notably in racing sims.

I dont miss the days of satellite out here, it was a necessary evil.  Its funny they still keep sending me offers.

Online gaming was a joke, i gave up even trying any sort with HughesNet.

We finally got a wifi based system and then with some contacts and help, Spectrum ran to my house (and onyl my house on this road LOL), so i went in about 5 years from Sat to Gig cable.

I'd recommend most people holding off on upgrading their Internet speed until you find out that whatever you have isn't enough.

Of course there are reasons to have more speed than the flight sim, so that's up to you. 😄

I would really like to increase my 20 Mbps internet speed (to be shared with two sons), but unfortunately ther's no way due to infrastructures. I fear this situation for some years yet.....

Just got 1Gbps in time for MSFS. Downloaded the beta in around 15 min...not too bad.

I have AT&T 1Gb Internet and I average 980 down and 950 up. No complaints or caps here 🙂
