What's wrong with this checklist?

Recommended Posts

I have fixed and fudged and worked with this file for three days and I can't get it to work with my GNS530 V2 in the Real Air Legacy in P3D v4.5. It always freezes the sim when I hit ENTER when it flashes CHECKLIST OK. It is named "checklist.GNS" and resides in the Simobjects/Airplane/Real Air Legacy V2 folder. I tried to adapt the format from the TEST checklist but I must have missed something.

Could someone take a look and see what I've done wrong?

Hi,

Can you give me access to the file as-is, instead of its content above?

I would if I could attach a file to this thread. I don't have a dropbox account.

Can you at least try the same file with only the first section, then with the first 2 sections and so on, until it fails? This will help pin point the problem.

Please note the file header comments: it is interpreted as ANSI text and you might want to cross check there is no Unicode character inserted somewhere in the file which might cause this?

Thanks for the help. Is there a list of Unicode characters that might be unacceptable?

I have done as you have suggested and slowly rebuilt the checklist.gns category by category until it failed. I have removed suspected spurious characters such as "@" and "%".  The file below worked until I added "DESCENT" and "Altimeter SET". Is there a maximum number of entries that I have exceeded that could cause the file to crash the program?

Hi,

Yes there is a limit indicated in the file header comments.

In this case, I've just noticed you've added a # (comment symbol) right in front of "REALITY XP GNS 2" line.

In doing so, the rest of the text in the following line, " Settings     CHK" creates an item for an unlabelled entry. Adding the "DESCENT" entry makes it the 10th.

The crash is most likely a combination of our product checklist parser not robust enough with the missing unlabelled entry and the GNS not capable of dealing with such unlabelled entries either.

Jean-Luc, I misunderstood the file header comment. Is that a Garmin programming limitation or a Reality XP limitation? You seem to suggest it is both.

I removed the # in front of the "REALITY XP GNS 2" line and it crashed the program at the same point so that was not the problem. However if you remove the # front of the "REALITY XP GNS 2" it counts as one of the 9 file header items so actually you waste a checklist category by doing so. I also found that by numbering the categories in the order a pilot uses them, they appear in order in the GPS. Otherwise they appear in alphabetized order.

Okay I think I'm getting the hang of it. I have a viable 9 "file header" checklist. Do you think it would be helpful to create a sticky for forum user created aircraft specific checklists like we have for panel configs? The individual user could just modify these files to suit them personally but the hard work would already be done.

Are you attempting to create checklists by hand?  i.e. from scratch in a text editor?  Have you tried using the actual Garmin Aviation Checklist Editor?

Yes I just found the link you quoted yesterday. Reading the supplied notes on the download I assumed it would not work with a GNS530. I would be delighted to use it if it works.

@fppilot  this is the ACE tool for the GTN only. We've supplemented the GNS trainer with the capability to import checklists. These are just ASCII text files with simple formatting and some limitations, solely respecting the GNS own limitations:

# Format Description:
# - Checklist files are treated as encoded in ASCII.
# - Comments start with the hash character, #, and extend to the end of the line.
# - Each line represents a checklist entry or a checklist item (up to 16 characters).
# - Entries start at the beginning of the line (up to 9 entries per file).
# - Items are idented with tab or spaces(s) (up to 30 items per entry)

@mslim The import feature is custom RXP implementation but the limitations are those internal to the GNS checklist system.

As for the suggestion this is a good idea I think, we do have one already in the GTN forum:

Just post a new message pretty much along the same line as when posting a panel mod and I'll make it the starting point of the official discussion!
