Any MSFS discussion in a X-Plane thread will lead to comparisons and vice versa…

Considering what MSFS is bringing to the table, I think that LR should stick with the mobile app only. What major advances will another version of XP bring in comparison to what folk will have in MSFS?  How long will that take? Is Vulkan even out of Beta yet? Too little…too late.

MSFS has made “serious” advances in rendering the air, land and sea. The discovery series shows just how advanced MSFS is compared to XP11 / P3D. And this is “vanilla” MSFS, no addons etc.

And its not just the SIM, MSFS engagement with the community to win back their confidence is unmatched. From the initial trailer (with millions of views), inviting reviewers out for an initial look (Frooglesim etc), to the weekly updates, to the discovery series, to the Alpha participation,…MSFS has courted the skeptics well.

Finally, MSFS has engaged the 3rd party Devs to get them onboard with developing content, and opened a store in the sim.

LR has too many challenges including getting their sim up to speed with core features (such as weather clouds), maintaining a fan base that will keep 3rd party Devs investing in content, engaging “more” with 3rd party Devs, etc… (I remember Austin reviewing X-envrio…at that time he not had much of an interaction with the developer…..who was trying to improve the “lacking” sky in XP11).

MSFS will be the only sim on my PC come Aug 18. I will not look back to the tons of ground, water, sky ect. addons needed to get XP11 to look better, and “waiting” for the airport list to grow. XP11 was doable when there was nothing really better out there, that all changed a little over a year ago.

P3D and XP will dry up when both the fans and 3rd party Devs migrate to MSFS. Like it or not, MSFS is the best thing that has happened to the flight sim community in the past 10 years…they are bringing you the real world….not a plausible one.

Almost everything you've said in here has been repeated ad nauseam for the past 20-30 years, with each iteration of MSFS.

Hey thanks for quoting it in full, we want as many people to see it...word for word...because it is true.

Well I am part of the alpha and I think there is a lot of over hype about the game. There is a lot of good things but there is a lot of things that needs to improve to make it the best sim there is. I don't see me uninstalling P3D or XP11 anytime soon. I just think people needs to have realistic expectation about what the game has to offer. The default aircraft are never going  to be payware level and it will take time for that content to be delivered.

MSFS engagement (for a Dev) is top notch.

When you can invite folk to try your sim, and then take them up in a real plane for comparison, you set yourself apart from the rest. When both your trailers and reviewer's vids showcasing your sim get millions of views, you have done something right.

Come Aug 18, folk will be on cloud nine (literally) in MSFS, good luck with getting more than nine clouds in XP11 grouped in a small circle around your plane without tanking performance.

One thing we can say for sure, the minions trash talking MSFS have done nothing to discourage the community from looking at MSFS...that misinformation campaign worked with FSW...but MSFS defeated that tactic with the very first trailer that was more popular than anything that went at a "flight sim" convention held during the same weekend. That...is....engagement.

How much money was spent for all this ? Do you think LR have that kinda money ?

Why don't you put the dry up comment in the p3d forum too  ? and do you have the alpha access ?

don't be a hypocrite you yourself is also comparing.

And therein lies the rub.

It takes an insane amount of time to build an aircraft of any degree of sophistication, like literally years - even with a talented and experienced team.

I wouldnt expect even pmdg to manage to port their P3D planes over anytime in the next two to three years, and they are now competing against high and ever increasing quality airliners for XP - and even themselves in P3D.

MS really face a chicken and egg problem with this release (devs wont touch it without market uptake and the market will not take it up without decent planes - at least not in any volume), and I reckon on it being a bloodbath of bad reviews once it actually launches.

People are not going to spend ~$100 on a plane for a sim they got bored of after two weeks. Simple as that.

As much as I agree with a lot of what you say, this I disagree with.

As a consumer, I don't care how much money LR has or doesn't have.  I just want the best sim that I can get no matter who produces it.  While I wish LR great success and I have enjoyed my time with XP11, I will be moving on.  I hope that XP12 is a great sim as well.

I am in the Alpha program and MSFS needs some work before release which will continue after release.  But, unlike Flight, Microsoft has too many partners already on board to make this anything but a success.

Money makes things like MFS i suppose. It's like Formula 1, you got the money you get the best engine and probably the driver.

Hope whatever XP versions are now on the way they come up with stuff that has long been ignored.

M sure MFS would be great and i am buying the standard edition

Definitely off to a much better start than previously - I noticed vatsim is integrated from day 1 for example.

But its the biggest problem they have to overcome, and just announcements doesnt mean its solved.

The SDK isnt ready, so difficult to see how any 3pd has really invested that much in it yet, it makes perfect sense for pmdg to intend to put the 737 on msfs2020. (never going to compete with zibo).

Independent reviewers will care very little for what might come, only what is available at launch. I dont think they will be anywhere near as kind as the youtubers who got all expenses paid trips to microsoft and a free flying lesson.

I could easily be wrong, we'll see.

So far Ive seen all the makings of 1 star reviews (over promise under deliver never reviews well) from the ppl that really matter. I think I'm most looking forward to the swiss001 videos.

this is your first flight sim launch then?

doesnt seem to hurt fps in any meaningful way.

Not something Ive really seen.

Explaining why the hype is lost on us (e.g. once you VR you can never go back to 2D, msfs not having support for our hardware) isnt the insulting trash talk its made out to be.

1) Yep, that will be my first launch....but I have had plenty of launches in XP (and their tons of addons) to know that MSFS is years beyond XP11, XP12...XP100.

2) Nice video and angle...it "looks like" XP clouds go out to the horizon. Do me favor, put up another video to confirm that for me? I am counting on you..

3) I can't explain why the hype is lost on you. I am not here to solve your issues with MSFS. Those of us who have followed / seen / listened to what MSFS has presented...are hype. It is a simple as that.

4) VR, VR, VR..... If MSFS thought that it was that important, they would have put it in there at launch. There are more important things to focus on, like a rendered world, the cloud system, good default aircraft. You know, the things that XP missed. So enjoy your virtual "reality" in a "plausible" world.

And they are now ready to deliver everything they promised. Or their failure to do so will become the public discourse.

Have a little looky what happened to Hololens.

Its not from lack of trying that MS have no VR offering. Asobo even made their most "successful" demo.

They simply do not have the technology to deliver a consumer grade VR experience, they can't rely on SteamVR or Oculus because that would kill the Microsoft store (already on its last legs). OpenXR may change that, but not soon enough to rescue the launch of flight 2.0.

If they can make it past those challenges, in ~5 years, it might be competitive with XP11.41. But by then, if current trends continue Laminar will probably be on XP14 or XP15, with who knows what features (perhaps able to auto issue your pilots licence for your electric flying car?)
