Updating my multi monitor setup to 4K (monitor, TV or wide)

Recommended Posts

I also went from (3) 24" screens to a single monitor. And can highly recommend it. Removing the bezels is a great thing. Just for fun I tried my 55" sony 4k HDR but ultimately decided it was just too big sitting only 3 feet away. However the image detail and brightness was amazing. The reason so many go with the sony is they have a high quality processor inside which eliminates any would be motion blur 100%, hence why they cost more. Ultimately though I went with a 38" widescreen monitor and believe it to be almost perfect for flightsim. I say almost because I am ready for a 40-44" version with HDR. Whatever you decide you will enjoy as the majority of the time with three screens you are still looking at the center screen and a larger single screen is just awesome.

I think I will settle with a 40-46 in TV, after measuring my available space any thing bigger then 46 would be too big. Now witch TV to choice from, I like the Sony 43" 4K UHD HDR LED Android Smart TV (XBR43X800H) , would that be a good choice?

Many thanks for all the advices.

Pierre,

Looks good. Note the computer resolutions mentioned here.  https://helpguide.sony.net/tv/husltn1/v1/en-003/04-03_03.html

You can run 3840*2160 at 24Hz, 30Hz and 60Hz.

Thanks

It's funny but I feel that I should buy a monitor, instead of a TV. With the TV I am buying feature that I do not need, like surround sound, ethernet connection, receiver...etc.

Will I not get more performance if I buy a monitor like a Philips Brilliance BDM4350UC 43" 4K UHD LED LCD Monitor - 16:9 - Black, Silver for example? Not much difference in price between the Sony and this.

Just a thought.

Pierre

Pierre,

You're right to pause and consider. When I was looking for a 4K monitor nothing larger than 32” was available. Looking at the Philips the first thing I see is no height adjustment. My BenQ can be raised and lowered and rotated through 90° degrees to make cable insertion easier and also to view images in portrait mode. Whilst you may not need the latter you may need the former depending on your table.

Performance is the same on any 4K monitor. The size is immaterial. Read this review. https://www.techradar.com/uk/reviews/philips-brilliance-bdm4350uc

Have a look at this LG with an IPS panel. Wall mounted might be better.

I have recently switched from a 55" 4k TV to a 49" 5K Ultra-Wide and the overal experience is much better, from immersion to image clarity.

As previously noted, generally monitors have a much higher quality standard when it comes to their panels when compared to TVs.

Besides, MSFS should also allow for higher refresh rates to be used and I don't think it makes sense in 2020 to limit yourself to 30 or even 60Hz.

I got a Samsung C49RG94SSUhttps://www.samsung.com/de/monitors/qled-gaming-monitor-c49rg9-zg/

The listed price is around 1.200 Euros, but I got it for 650 out of eBay packaged as new. Not sure if the same model is available in Canada.

Lucky you, great deal. I am trying to locate where I can get the LG that Ray suggest, with the COVID-19 and the confinement it`s not easy to find a store where you can easily return stuff.

Hi,

I found this monitor on Amazon.ca ViewSonic VX4380-4K 43 Inch Frameless Widescreen IPS 4K Monitor with HDMI USB and DisplayPort. Is this any good? I could order it and return it if I do not like it.

Also I couldn't find the LG 43UD79-B : 43'' Class 4K UHD IPS LED Monitor in Canada, is the LG 43UN700-B 43 Inch UHD (3840 X 2160) IPS Display with USB Type-C, 4 HDMI Inputs and HDR10 equivalent?

Pierre, have you seen P3D in 4K on a 43” display? I ask because it’s a huge increase in screen space over what you currently have. When I wanted to get a display larger than my 27” 1920*1200 Dell monitor I took some screenshots of the panel and saved them as JPGs.

I put them on a USB stick and went to a TV shop and asked if they could show them. They did and it helped my decide that a Sony 32” HD TV was fine and not over large.

If you like I can take a 4K screenshot of the PMDG737 VC and sent it to your email box. If you’re interested send me a PM with your address.

Ive just checked the LG43UN700 and it is chroma 4:4:4 compatible. The LG looks to be better than the Viewsonic.

Pierre, the LG 43UD79-B is the monitor I currently use. It is very nice but the image quality is not any better than my previous Sony TV for flight sim. Don't get hung up on the TV vs. monitor thing unless you need the extra features like picture-in-picture. The best thing you can do is what Ray suggested, go into a TV/monitor store with flightsim cockpit images on a thumb drive and look at them on different size and types of TV/monitors. Having used a 55" and 43" I am thinking the best size may be 49". Other people swear buy a 65" and no smaller. Ray likes a smaller size. The size is very personal based on the pros and cons of each size and how much room you have for it. Only you can determine that and you won't be able to determine this by asking people on the forums.

Here's a link to a site that does TV reviews that may be helpful as it tells you what video formats different TVs can display including 4:4:4, RGB, 30hz, and at what resolution.

https://www.rtings.com/tv

Take some of the comments on this sight with a grain of salt as they are reviewing them from a standard TV viewing distance and not close up on a desk. Get yourself into the store with the thumb drive. Don't fret too much. You will most likely like whatever you decide to purchase.

Ray, save the images multiple times in different formats. I found that the different brands of TVs only read certain formats of images.

Hi Ted, I've found that standard JPGs should be acceptable to all TVs. I made the mistake of saving images as png and they couldn't be recognised. If Pierre has a 4K TV he can see these images on his if it has a USB socket. Most have.
