Not sure how an infrared-guided missile locks onto a radar gun. But fun story nonetheless.

Cheers!

Yup. Additionally, I'd be interested to know how an air to air missile was going to be shot at a ground target. 🙂

You guys beat me to it.   I wish I had a nickel for every sidewinder my crews loaded on F-105s.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

A sidewinder couldn’t be used for that purpose, but an ARM (Anti-Radiation-Missile) such as the AGM-88 definitely could. An ARM missile is specifically designed to home in on ground-based radar emitters. In a combat scenario, they would mainly be used to destroy guidance radars used by surface-to-air missile launch sites.

Actually, sometimes you didn't even need a missile: During the Gulf War, coalition pilots were aware that their radio communications were being monitored by the Iraqi ground defences, so occasionally when they were painted by a few SAM or Triple A search radars, they would sometimes give the call 'Magnum!', which is the radio alert for when you launch an AGM-88 HARM (or at the time, also the - now retired - British ALARM equivalent), even though they were not actually genuinely launching a missile. Hearing this call, Iraqi radar defences would often shut down, rather than risk getting a missile up the wazoo.

There is a good portrayal of this kind of thing during the Vietnam War in the movie Flight of the Intruder - with excellent visual effects which still stand up well today even though the movie is now almost 30 years old - where they are flying an Iron Hand (SAM suppression) strike in an A6 Intruder, using the older AGM-45 Shrike.

This is an oldie. I remember being emailed this and boring my audience back in 2002 on the difference between heat-seeking and radiation-seeking missiles. Also the fact that missile systems need to be armed before they can be used.

Always like a good laugh. Similar to the one about the large military ship and the lighthouse arguing who has the right way.

Specs: black box thingy with spinning fans, lights and a bunch of wires that go to screens with pretty colours and a keyboard with many keys. The black box thingy also has a push button activated coffee cup holder.

That's great, next time I get pulled over I will politely tell the officer he's lucky I was able to disarm the missile before it was fired and for saving his life he could at least let me off with a warning...

This is AVSIM. We are flight simmers. Isn't all our fun all technical? 🙂

I hope not. Hangar chat is far more than just nuts-and-bolts stuff. Sometimes swapping a few white lies and bragging about the women we've known is a whole lot better that discussing the aerodynamics of moving bodies based on varying air densities.......Doug
