Blurred in Bing

Recommended Posts

Bing maps still has many airports blurred when they are (partly or shared) military. An example is Eindhoven (EHEH). It's not a small airport, but at a Dutch forum someone mentioned it is represented as a grass strip?

I have no idea why this airport is blurred in Bing, in Google Maps it is in plain view for over 10 years already. Looks like Bing is very slow with updates.

Can someone who is a tester maybe say some words on how airports that are blurred in Bing are shown? I looked up some military airfields in the USA, but the ones I tried were not blurred in Bing. Are there still blurred airfield in the USA?

One of the most secretive areas in the U.S. is Area 51 and it is not blurred.  Bing shows that area in pretty good detail, I even saw this!

😜

I suspect the blurring of certain areas was by request of the government.  Interesting, though, that I pulled up Schiphol on Google Maps and there is no blurring, so perhaps the Bing map is old.

I have a feeling, the Bing quality will in general be a big problem. And when you have a look in their Feedback Snapshot / TOP Questions section, there is a point: Bing Improvements Plan / Updates. And it is not answered yet.

And when I see something like this on Bing, I am a little bit afraid:

In the All handcrafted airports vid you can see Schiphol too and it doesn’t look blurry at all. I made 2 screenshots of Schiphol :

agree with bing map quality, google map let's me zoom in to my house more than bing with bing offering higher resolution (google may thus just extrapolate when zooming in more, resulting in many ugly pixels) though google is more actual, bing shows houses in the neighborhood which were torn down at least 1-2 years ago. Hope the MSFS data will be more up to date

Some parts of the world you can find airports blurred in Google Earth, also Greece is a good example in some airbases.

GE doesn't indeed blur Eindhoven which is only a small military transport facility, hardly a major asset in NATO strike capability. The grass strip is maybe used to train the RNAF C-130 pilots to the Sarajevo landing 😉 .  I have not checked all the AFB in France, but some are definitely blurried for good reasons and I hope that the AI will not do a good job at recreating their perimeter and buildings.

Bing is generally quite poor quality. Interestingly, they had much better European imagery up until a few years ago.

It’s not just Bing. Satellite imagery in general can be poor quality (clouds, colors etc) at any of the platforms. Google is indeed more up to  date, but I wouldn’t say it’s better quality.

I would say it’s 50-50 when comparing both platforms. At some places Google has better imagery, and at other places Bing has better imagery. For example on Africa Bing looks way better than Google, in general.

@martvl When I look at Schiphol in Bing Maps it's not blurred.

@GSalden Yes, I know Schiphol is a detailed airport, in the 'silver' version.

In many areas Google Maps is more detailed, and it has more 3D cities, but that's not what I meant. I meant that in Bing EHEH airport is deliberately blurred out. It can be a government thing, but I doubt that since Google shows it without the blur. My question is how these blurred out airports are represented in MSFS? It's my home airport, so I like to fly from and to there, would be a pity if it's just a grass strip.

Top: Google Maps. Bottom: Bing Maps.

So, before release the conclusion is that there are parts in the world where the terrain is less sharp and there are color differences ....

Indeed. Overflying a VRP at the CTR limit of my home airport, the water is green in MSFS.  Flying there IRL at 1.500ft the water is more brown and dark blue (at least thats been the case since last 3 months). But these things are minor and probably most notable to us who both sim and fly IRL.
